'You Stalinist hag', I screamed at her,
'You anti-theist mangy cur',
And then, as I inwardly grinned,
I reached for the doll, then I reached for the pins.
Gordon's lost it!

How can I be pleased at having seemingly tipped ''Me colleague'' over the edge.

You could try adding the next verse!

I reached for the pins and the pump up doll,
Then realised it was only a toy.
Why am I acting this way and with a LOL,
I saw that I was turning into Phallusy Boy.

A little prick, that's all it took
For the pins to do their terrible task
But then, in an unexpected twist,
She turned to me, and then she asked.

It's a curious fact that a remarkably high proportion of poets are absolutely awful at reading their work. Why, I've no idea. Yeats and Eliot were just terrible (though Larkin IMHO was rather good). There's a reason they usually choose actors to do it.

Is there any reason why a poet - whose skill is in composing  words into a poem - should be good at reading them out. If you want a poem read, you'd do better to get an actor.

Am I a less well-read, literary person because I find it hard to appreciate poetry?

Not necessarily. I don't like poetry as a rule either, although some individual poems do do it for me.

Also, I see jazz as being a pointless waste of breath.

Well yes. If your craft is pretty well by definition all about language, metre and rhythm, and given that based on historical linguistic analysis poetry is predominantly thought of as a remembered oral rather than merely literary medium (i.e. Homer, etc.), poetry printed on a page being very much the historical Johnny-come-lately, then it's surely not that much of a stretch to think that poets typically ought to read poetry well. They're supposed to have been doing it for quite a long time. I happen to know a fairly well-known (in those circles) published poet and a bloody good one too; but the lifeblood of his craft, like that of his compatriots, is spoken word verse delivered to an audience. It's an oral medium, primarily.

Well Brahms and Liszt
came to mind.
You all require a 'poe' but not an edgar Allan,
A touch of 'Frost' and bobs your uncle.
It raised a Brow but not an Elizabeth Barrett.
Yours Words-worth little but who knows,
your fame could be a Cummings.
Your trying Hard-y and even Tennyson
But your driving Oscar Wilde.

You could Donne your cap to John.
Could be one in the Bysshe for Shelley.
A Tolkien of your affection for J R.
Burns the word for your poems.
Leave them in the Grave-s said Robert.

Don't Nash your teeth or Leer.
It is just us being silly.
If you doll with pin is not called
Millay then leave in John Browns
grave just moldering away.

I love poetry, but it isn't obligatory. If it's not your thing, fine - as long as you don't go on to say "poetry is rubbish".
When conspiracy nuts start spouting their bollocks, the best answer is "That's what they want you to think".
