I'm so much of a skeptic that I'm even skeptical of claims of mass hysteria.

Hair, like internal organs (albeit much lower down the scale, obvs.) is a commodity - it's bought and sold for a good price for a variety of reasons, the main one being the creation of realistic* wigs that sell for top dollar. This seems more plausible to me than "they all independently imagined it".

* comparatively speaking.
Pain, or damage, don't end the world. Or despair, or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man, and give some back. - Al Swearengen, Deadwood.

My question would be 'Were a woman, in the culture this has happened in,  to be known to have sold her hair be shameful in some way?'

Not wigs. Extensions.

I think there has to be a kernel of truth in there somewhere. I immediately thought if hair being sold, or stolen to order, but then the accounts say that the cut hair was found thrown on the floor.
