I've not known anyone to have power of attorney unless their relative is no longer able to deal with finances. It's easy enough to sort out then and doesn't take long to arrange, I've known a couple of people who've done it. MMy parents and in-laws certainly trust their children enough to hand it all over to us if necessary but while they can still think, read and communicate, it isn't. Which I hope they do until the end!

Before I went to Australia for a year on exchange teaching, I set up a Power of Attorney for my sons, and they dealt with anything that needed dealing with while I was away, including being a contact for my exchangee if required as she was living in my house.

I turned that into an Enduring PofA when I returned and it will be available if ever needed.

My wife and her sister have joint P o A for their mother, she is 94 now and is into quite advanced dementia, such a shame but thank goodness they got things into order before she really went downhill.

Very sad business ippy.
Susan what you did seems very sensible as you were away for so long.
