Has it not got a "flash lights and keep hooting loudly" algorithm?
Ah, but I was so much older then ... I'm younger than that now

I nearly saw a non-driven van in an accident a few minutes ago.
I was walking to work (I'm on a computer at work now) up a road with a gentle gradient, when I saw a white van coming towards me, with two blokes, one on either side, running alongside, hanging on to the door handles. For a minute, I thought the van was being stolen, but then realised that it had no driver - the hand-brake must have slipped off. The bloke on the pavement side let go of his handle to go round the front and push (rather dangerous, I'd've thought), so I took his place on the handle, and we managed to stop it just before it rolled out into traffic on a busy road at a T-junction. Not a word of thanks did I get, but it's possible they hadn't even noticed me.

last night I was leaving a shop and a bloke held the door open for someone coming in, and me leaving. It was raining, so I took the time to say not just "Ta' which would be my normal thanks but 'Thank you very much'. He replied with 'You are very welcome'. Whole thing made me smile.

You should live here. Aching politeness to the point where entire supermarket aisles grind to a halt with cries of ‘after you’, ‘no you’. And strangers say hello to each other.

I’m going off topic but something that made me smile was shopping in town once with my daughter, an older lady stepped out of a hotel in an outfit she’d clearly made a lot of effort over. ‘ I remarked to my daughter how smart she looked and as we  passed I asked if she was going to a wedding, which she was. ‘You look lovely,’ I said, and kept going. No idea if I made her day or not but it made mine thinking I might have.

Continuing what is a derail but I think a justifiable one (at least one Mod agrees with me  ;)), I often want to say you look great to people but don't because of how it might be taken.

Maks sense. I don't think I'd compliment a stranger my own age either, at least not in passing like that.

Not just about own age, I hear Harry H Corbett in my head. People younger than you can on occasion get away with it.

But because of a human idiot.
You know what, I think that will be the biggest problem with self driving technology. It is almost impossible, at this time, to program a computer to cope with the entire range of stupidity it is likely to encounter on the roads. And I'm not talking about just human stupidity. Once we have lots of autonomous cars on the road at once, I bet we'll see all sorts of weird and wonderful emergent behaviour.

I worry about self-drive vehicles, seeing how much bother some drivers manage to get into when using their SATNAVS.

Presumably it'll be programmed to run over stupid pheasants. They keep hurling themselves in front of my car.

Pheasants do seem to be birds with suicidal tendencies, I have run over quite a number over the years.

Road kill. If you run over more than one floo you could take home & hang in garage.

That's a bit extreme!
Maybe just a metaphorical slap on the wrist for not paying attention when driving would be enough?

Oh yes I'd do that if they were still alive, give them a copy of the green cross code (if such things still exist), and tell them to brace themselves.

yes, but you're not supposed to chase them across the fields in your car!
