Steve H,

Quote
"Mary Poppins and I" is politer, putting her first, but "I and Mary Poppins" is grammatically acceptable.

Acceptable to whom? (or should that be "who"?  ;) )

Prescriptive grammars say that putting the "I" first is wrong, others say that it's the convention for politeness rather than a rule. I have to say that I wince when I hear it, but that's my age I guess.
"Don't make me come down there."

Putting yourself first on these occasions is the equivalent of chalk squealing on a school teachers chalk board to me.

Thinking about it we keep on hearing of a bit of rain, a bit of rain? Liquid, a drop of rain surly?

I really don't know what our world is coming to?
