If you were to live your life over again, but were permitted to make some changes what would they be?

I would have wished my birth family to have been non religious, as the god bit spoilt my childhood. I also wish my husband hadn't had a burst aneurysm, which caused him brain damage. Apart from that I don't think I have done too badly.

I would have liked to have met my second wife first and not have wasted time with the other one.

The other thing I would have liked to have done was to burn down the Jack Ties adoption society's headquarters in Muswell Hill and have gotten away with it, only the building and without hurting any people of course.

I would have liked to have had a sister (or two) so that I had some understanding of the feminine side of homo sapiens. Apart from my mother ours was an all male household and - at the time it really mattered - I went to a boys only grammar school. When I started to take an interest in girls I was totally clueless - I had been fed the sugar and spice and slugs and snails rubbish and had no reason to doubt it.

The other thing that I would change would be the acceptance of the diagnosis of my wife's illness. She had cancer not irritable bowel syndrome.
Does Magna Carta mean nothing to you? Did she die in vain?

Sorry to hear that second part of your post H H.

I kind of wish I had listened to my mum and applied myself more at school. Now I'm stuck in a dead end job just like she warned me.

Believe me you're not on your own with schooling, school was an imposition on my time for all of the time I was there, I couldn't stand 99% of the teachers, a mutual feeling, however as unwise as I was at the time I found myself to be a natural autodidact, one of the worst things I have suffered and have never been able to overcome is bloody spelling, it drives me potty.

Generally apart from the above I'have managed to go through life with the knocks we all have from time to time and for the last thirty years before I've retired I have enjoyed the larger part of my working life doing as I would chose to do, with the odd, very odd hiccup that we all have.

Life's what you make of it school isn't for everybody, I know some really thick educated people, it's amusing how unaware they are of this predicament of theirs.

I should have applied myself more at school.

Only when you leave it, do you see what a valuable thing education is!

Looking back school was piece of piss. I preferred the snooker hall though.

I wouldn't have given up pipe-smoking for 20-odd years, and I wouldn't have wasted 15 years as a happy-clappy charismatic Christian.

I'll go with all of you except for the smoking, forget all of the health stuff, smoking stinks to high heaven and I can't stand the smell of it, even for a couple of seconds.

I wouldn't change anything (except putting myself in danger on one occasion which had bad consequences but a long time ago). Other than that, life has been good. There were things I thought I'd do which I haven't done - such as working abroad for a while, living in central London - but they were only thoughts, not ambitions & I have no regrets about my life.

I came across this Ojibwa quote recently:

‘Sometimes I go about in great pity for myself, and all the while a great wind is bearing me across the sky.’

I can’t say I’ve had the happiest of experiences but somehow they seem to have borne me to where I am now, and I guess that this is where I am meant to be. I have a home, children, a partner, and I wouldn’t be this person that I am had those things not happened.

I once lit a bonfire after pouring petrol onto it on a hot day. By the time I'd got the matches ready the petrol had vaporised. The bang was quite impressive and I became briefly airborne. Not even the strongest morphine injections helped with the pain afterwards. That was an experience I could have done without.

How absolutely terrible. A friend of my mum’s died after a similar accident. It’s horrible.
