Driving in France
« on: July 06, 2018, 12:28:41 PM »
I don't know whether anyone is planning to visit France this summer but if so there are a couple of changes of which you may not be aware.

The first concerns speed limits. In order to cut the level of road deaths, the national speed limit for single carriageway roads has been reduced from 90kph to 80kph (about 50mph). This applies to all roads whether Nationale (N) or Departmentale (D). One strange anomaly is that where a single carriageway road is divided into three lanes, with a single lane in one direction and two in the other - thus permitting overtaking - the limit on the overtaking section is 90kph but on the single lane only 80kph.

The second concerns exhaust pollution. Paris and a few other towns are restricting access to cars bearing a vignette testifying to the exhaust quality. This costs about £4 and can be applied for in the UK. Non compliance can result in fines of over £100. The number towns requiring the Crit'Air certificate is currently quite small - but will grow! There is information about this on the RAC website and there is an English section at:

     https://www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/en

The application for a Crit'Air vignette requires a copy of the car's registration certificate - but not the whole four page document, just the information on page 2.

Apparently there are already scammers operating websites which offer to do this for you - at a price. You have been warned.
