Black History Month
« on: October 02, 2018, 12:48:32 PM »
From the Graun:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/sep/30/councils-condemned-for-shameful-rebranding-of-black-history-month

Is this really that bad? after all, there are only limited resources, it would not be possible to have a "history" every month. I am reminded a bit of those whom in the eighties wanted separate committees for women's rights, disabled rights, ethnic minorities, etc. Ultimately it came down to a question of who was going to pay for them all?

What the hell has it got to do with "appropriation"? This "cultural appropriation" gonads is starting to piss me off. It's just a parroted buzz-phrase, and what's wrong with it anyway?
When conspiracy nuts start spouting their bollocks, the best answer is "That's what they want you to think".

I like the idea of schools having a 'My History' month. Not sure it should replace black history month. Dunno.

I get the fear that having a currently racist PM who was behind the Windrush scandal that it may well feel it is the wrong time to get rid of Black History month but as you say, My History month makes a lot of sense.

I too like the idea of a 'My History' month but I love Black History month and would hate to see it diluted. That's just my view, partly based on feelings I suppose.

I had never come across 'Black History' month before today.

There's a lot about it on television.

What sort of programmes is it on, certainly none of the ones we watch?

The influence of the money made from slavery is still being dealt with. I live in an area of town that is named after its benefits from slavery. The museum of modern art at the start of the street is in what was in a house that is jaw dropping in its ostentatiousness. And I didn't see a black person locally till I was 14.

If we got rid of state sponsored religious schools, a religion month might work.

I'm sort of teasing. We can have x history months because they are not part of what we generally teach.

Oh, ok.

Until not so long ago black history was the GCSE syllabus taught in most schools.

eta a similar syllabus still exists.
