The idea that matter and radiation are actually fields is gaining ground.
It's not "gaining ground", it's standard science. Quantum Field Theory explains three of the four forces, it is the basis of the Standard Model, which predicted the Higgs Boson, and it unifies standard quantum mechanics with Special Relativity. One aspect of it (quantum electrodynamics) is the most accurately tested theory there is.
What's missing is that a number of parameters have to be added "by hand" (such as the masses of particles) to the Standard Model and the unification with General Relativity and hence gravity (which is what hypotheses like String Theory and Loop Quantum Gravity are all about).
From this the idea of mind and consciousness also being fields can be an obvious extrapolation.
Only in the sense that it underlies all matter and hence brains and brains produce minds and consciousness. There is zero evidence of any need for addition of fields for minds and consciousness.
