Cover Stories - original recordings vs cover versions.
« on: February 22, 2021, 05:18:53 PM »
Maybe an idea to do this on a seperate thread   e.g.
Original vs cover(s)?

1. Original
2. Made popular by
3. My favourite version

The song is The Book of Love.
Original by The Magnetic Fields
Made popular by Peter Gabriel. The version played at weddings, and on the last ever episode of Scrubs!
My favourite by Billie Marten, who by the way was only 12yo when that video was made!

If You go Away by Jaques Brel (aka "Ne me quitte pas")

The original in French is by Brel.

It was first a hit for somebody called Damita Jo (US?), although I think I first became aware of it through Bassey's version.

The definitive "English" version is Dusty's. Although to be completely honest the best version is still Brel's original.

The English lyrics were by Rod Mckuen and not as dark as Brel's French lyrics.

Charles Trenet, supposedly in the restaurant car of a train, wrote one of the most singular, haunting songs of the 20th century - La Mer.

This was bowdlerised by Bobby Darin and became Beyond The Sea.  And this is the name by which Trenet's masterpiece is now generally known.
Does Magna Carta mean nothing to you? Did she die in vain?
