Love second-hand bookshops. I have lots of Oxfam bookshops in neighbouring towns, but none in Hemel Hempstead (we haven't even got an ordinary Oxfam shop any more, ffs!). However, I do worry that Oxfam bookshops are unfair competition for commercial second-hand bookshops, with their donated stock, largely unpaid volunteer staff, and probably reduced rent. I wonder if they have an agreement not to open a shop near an existing commercial shop. I hope so.
Yesterday, I went to Harpenden Oxfam bookshop, and picked up some Folio books to add to my collection, and today went to Jordans Antiques, which has a small book section in the cellar, and got two more: Boswell's 'Life of Johnson', and JB Priestley's 'English Journey'.
In the previous thread on this topic, I mentioned wanting to visit Baggins' Book Bazaar in Rochester, but that plan had to be indefinitely postponed when Covid-19 arrived. Hopefully, it might be possible this summer or autumn.
