The Mauritanian

The Mauritanian:  there being little of any interest to me on the main terrestrial channels last night I decided to watch The Mauritanian, a feature film which  - unable to get a conventional release at present - has been premiered on Amazon Prime.

It is a film about a man who was identified as having a connection with one of the perpetrators of 9-11. Having a connection is de facto proof of involvement - of course - and so he was kidnapped and smuggled into Guantanamo Bay. The Americans, being the flag wavers of democracy, decency and freedom would not involve themselves in anything like torture, brainwashing and thuggery in order to extract a confession, would they?

I very highly recommend this film.

Two observations about the casting:  Benedict Cumberbatch plays an American colonel and Jodie Foster a campaigning lawyer. I was amazed to find that Jodie Foster is a middle-aged woman. In my mind she is permanently preserved as the teen aged prostitute in Taxi Driver ...

Yes, it's very well done. The thing that shocked me about it was how little I was shocked by it. I thought that the way that the Christian beliefs of Stuart Couch, the person Cumberbatch portrays, influenced his decision not to prosecute was well done in that it also should the opposition he received from other Christians.

I read the story behind the film and review - sounds very interesting, but can't see us signing up with Prime to view it (even on a free trial) :(

Ah, but I was so much older then ... I'm younger than that now

One of the production companies involved in its making is BBC Film. I suspect that it will eventually find its way to your tv set.
Apparently it was filmed in South Africa.
