Hard to imagine the demeaning cruelty these kids suffered - it's a certain Scotman's birthday tomorrow (he'd be 264) and his "Man's inhumanity to man, Makes countless thousands mourn." comes to mind.

That some have their childhoods compromised by deliberate cruelty is, in my opinion, among the worst of all possible evils.

Horrible and obviously should not occur.

Very difficult to understand to what extent this kind of cruelty is increasing or decreasing over time.

No doubt there always has been some level of it- but is it reaching a crisis or  tipping point now? To me it seems to be, at least in the UK, especially if considering the crises in care, health, mental health, police, probation ... 
Ah, but I was so much older then ... I'm younger than that now
