« on: February 20, 2023, 08:58:00 PM »
'#OnThisDay in 1875 Mary Barbour was born. She was one of the first women to serve as a bailie in Glasgow and here she is (end left) in her ceremonial robes with (second left to right) Mary Bell, Mary Snodgrass and Mary Robertson.

Mary Barbour is well known today as one of the main organisers of the 1915 Glasgow Rent Strikes. In 1916 she founded the Women’s Peace Crusade with Helen Crawfurd and Agnes Dollan, campaigning for a settlement to the war. She was one of the first women councillors in Glasgow, standing as the Labour candidate for Fairfield. She long campaigned for the health and welfare of the working classes, serving on several committees as councillor. '
