A prayer

Overheard by a monk - from a homeless man with tears in his eyes, staring at the crucified Christ:

"You did not have to do it"

This man had come to realise the true nature of God's love.
God did not need to bring us into existence.
God did not need to suffer and die for our salvation.
God did not need to give us the amazing gift of free will, which enabled us to choose to turn to Him, or turn away from Him.
God did not need our love.
God did everything out of love - a love beyond all understanding.
The truth will set you free  - John 8:32
Truth is not an abstraction, but a person - Edith Stein
Free will, though it makes evil possible, is also the only thing that makes possible any love or goodness or joy worth having. - CS Lewis
Joy is the Gigantic Secret of Christians - GK Chesterton
