Glasgow students are complaining that they will have to do proper exams again. Frankly, I'm surprised that it has taken this long to get them back into the examination rooms.

Unclear whether the complaint is a move back to in person exams per se or the fact that the change was only announced with a couple of months notice.
If the latter then I think the complaint is totally valid - students need to understand at the beginning of their studies how they will be examined, via coursework and exams etc. It isn't reasonable to change this part way through their studies as the way in which students learn, organise themselves and plan for assessment will not unreasonably be different if preparing for an open book-style exam compared to a traditional closed-book exam.
It is perfectly reasonable for a university to decide to go back to traditional exams but that needs to be clear at the outset of the studies, not something that students are informed about part way through their studies.
