Well people did die for that flag thousands of years ago, if by "thousands" you mean "about one thousand". It was a symbol used in the crusades. Lots of people died because of the crusades.

Perhaps a more savvy politician might have chosen to ignore making a comment that would always have been led on?

Aren't all headlines by definition clickbait?
