It is about 7:15 a.m. and I keep humming in my head the first line of that song, 'It's a most unusual day ...'
My son has just phoned me from his hospital bed. Having been prep'd yesterday morning, the operation had to be postponed because of a lack of ICU places, but he will be operated on today, all being well. I've had a bath and made sure I am organised to be collected at 9:0 a.m. for my operation, but I should be back home around the middle of the day. Then it will be a matter of waiting to hear from my daughter-in-law that my son is safely post-op.

Thank you, Gordon. I had to sit around waiting for quite a while, but I had taken my braille book with me. Went into theatre at 2:20 p.m. Successful op under local anaesthetic, cup of tea and sandwich then wait for car to come and take me home.

Phoned my daughter-in-law as  soon as I got home to hear that my son had been in ICU since 4:0 p.m. having had a quadruple, yes a QUADRUPLE, by-pass. My goodness, what an overwhelming shock to hear that! Update when I know more.

Glad to hear that all went well for you - fingers crossed that it goes equally well for your son: I'm sure he is in good hands.

Thank you and enki for good wishes. My son was back in HDU last night with drains and tubes removed, so that looks promising.   

I have a very slight soreness at point of small wound, but no problems.

I just wish there was more of a clear future for men with prostate cancer. With increasing awareness though and a much more outgoing approach, there will be far better support and knowledge available I hope.

My son phoned me this afternoon! His voice sounded tired of course, but he has been out of bed and sitting on a chair. Walking a bit was hoped for, but he felt a bit dizzy - not surprising!
It turns out he had a triple by-pass - they put a stent in one of the arteries as soon as he was taken to hospital, so that accounts for the fourth artery.
We can all breathe again now as he is on the right side of it all.

I did 9 laps up and down the Close and have had no need of any pain killers - well, I didn't expect to - same as last time!

Thank you, yes, it is, isn't it. Today he was checked by the physio who, it seems, was pleased he could talk easily while walking. He's just waiting for final checks then a friend is coming to drive him home. His wife and daughter are driving back from Cornwall today.  His hockey club fellow members have been providing plenty of texting, messaging etc support.

All I've got that runs on petrol is 'The Beast', the big, battered-but-working, second-hand lawnmower that my son bought from a friend and I bought from my son. It runs on ordinary unleaded. I don't know if it'll take E10, but there's one way to find out.

Phone call from my son this morning sounding right back to normal! Such a relief since when he phoned the other day he sounded so very tired. Yesterday he walked for five minutes following rehab instructions. His entry report showed that his condition was 'critical' but the discharge one was very positive and they don't seem to expect any further problems. What an enormous relief from the worry of the past two weeks! 
He should be walking for about 30  minutes fairly briskly in about 5 to 6 weeks so we are hoping he can look forward to walking daughter down the aisle at the end of this month.

Yes, and I think my son will be well looked after and also made to do all the right things to absolutely avoid any problems!

I shall not be going - it is in Sheffield and I would need guiding everywhere; I'd have to go up the day before and I cannot face trying to manage a hotel room etc etc. Also, even if I went, I would not be able to see enough and that, combined with having to use hearing aids, would mean I wouldn't be able to hear properly what was going on either! My son will arrange for me to see some photos on my computer, or more likiely on his large screen TV,  later on.
