As we get older, just about the most important thing to do is not to fall! That is why I always wear good trainers. The base being wider, particularly at the heel, means that even if you catch your foot on something you are far less likely to trip. Also, since the accident (three years ago now!) I take a walking stick when I'm out as this extra point can form the fthird point of a triangle which is the most stable shape. Even though with exercise and determination I have regained full strength in my left hip and do not need to support myself with the stick, I never take a chance on going out without it, particularly because of the added problem of having only the peripheral vision on one side. Even in the house, I never try to turn quickly - quite a few people I know have done this and fallen - breaking hips or arms.
