Just for something to do, I looked up torvill and Dean ... and it seems that on Thursday evening on Ch 4 at 9:30 there is the first of a series of 3 programmes teaching 50 Notti ngham youngsters to perform a show. Sounds interesting.

Why is it that some people in our area feel impelled to put their rubbish and recycling out well in advance of bin collection day? It is very windy here, and I noticed on my walks today that people have already put their bins out, it isn't collected until tomorrow!  By the time the bin men arrive there will be rubbish blowing all over the neighbourhood, that really annoys me! >:(

In our area this is actually a breach of the local bylaws and can get you a £ 1,000.00 fine.

What do you mean by "well in advance"? Most people in my area put the bins out the night before collection day. They're supposed to be outside your property by 7:00am and that's not necessarily possible for everyone, so the vast majority do it late the previous evening.

Additionally they're wheely bins with lids, so rubbish can't blow anywhere.

Our bylaw is the same, but it applies to any rubbish etc placed on the street side of the property line and behind the property line before midnight of collection day. We are supposed to be getting wheely-bins before the end of the month. That should be interesting as they are only allowing one bin per property and ours is a HIMO with five separate 'households"!

I can understand your irritation if rubbish is blowing about but if the stuff is in bins, why would that happen?  Bins aren't usually that flimsy.  I have known bins to be blown over in the past but that was when there was gale force wind so it was an exception, and it happened to lots of bins and other things.

Loved the quotations your eldest sent to you, they are hilarious.

Why are people putting bins out two or three days before collection?

It is daft but really the council should provide bins, it is always a problem when only sacks are available.  Our recycling and food waste are collected at an unearthly hour on a Wednesday morning so bins (blue and green topped) are always put out the night before. If we only had sacks the foxes would pull them apart, I can remember that happening many years ago and it was dreadful.  The general refuse bin  (black top), is collected about 1.30pm so can go out on the day but because we have bins for everything, if people are away they can put them out in advance.

Nothing (don't remember what I was going to say here, I seem to have started a new sentence :-) ).

If it really is a problem floo, why don't you and neighbours ask the council for extra bins?  That's what happened in Greenwich Borough where I live, so long ago that I don't remember;  it wasn't me who complained and asked, I thought about it and by the time I'd finished thinking, others had done it and we had new bins.  They don't have to be great big ones, just up the road the borough is Bromley and they have small, neat recycling and food waste bins.

Ladies and Gents,

it's been fun visiting, but I'm going to have to disappear for a while, again. I've just got a new job, and I'll be spending quite a lot of my time on the road, driving, so a lot of my spare time will be taken up now.

I'll pop back every now and then to see how everyone is, of course :)

This morning I was thinking back to my schooldays. When I was about 13/14 a classmate and I would sometimes walk down to our local town centre during the two hour lunch break and have our lunch in one of the eateries. On the way back to school we often walked passed the undertakers, which had its doors open on a fine day. The coffins which were being constructed were on display. We would dare each other to run in and touch a coffin if there was no one around! We did this on a number of occasions until one day we totally freaked out on discovering one of the coffins was occupied by a body of a man in a suit, YIKES! That was one daft game we didn't play again! :o

Back in 1963 when I was six, our family moved to Hong Kong.

We had a wonderful flat on Tai Hang Road with a massive balcony overlooking the harbour. Back then, Hong Kong was nothing like as built up as it is now and our building was surrounded by quite a bit of greenery.

Me and my younger brother thought of it as jungle and shortly after we moved in we went out to explore.  After an hour or so we came across some large clay urns which, on inspection, were full of human bones.  We grabbed a skull and took it back to our flat whereupon both our Chinese amahs were aghast.  It turned out the bones were the remains of the ancestors of our Chinese landlords.

We nearly got evicted!

So ya dug up some bones and kept them for show and tell and then buried them when you moved. Oh and you kept a gravestone on display to boot.  I don't believe that for a second. Oh, and what did the police have to say about it? They will have examined those bones and determined if they were human. Did you tell the new owners of your home about what you dug up and reburied? Do you know they have commented on your stories about their home?
