Apropos of nothing, I used to be able to play that tune on my nose.  I could also 'throw' it, making it sound as though it came from somewhere else which worked if no-one was looking at me of course.  I'd do it in the classroom and it caused great mirth.

The I progressed to "Pictures of Matchstick Men", more openly.

Later I could do "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring", playing both sides of my nose.

I thought I was original!  Then I saw someone doing it on TV and I thought, "Bah!"  I put my instrument away with a heavy heart  :(, figuritively speaking.

Dear A Topic for going off Topic,

Well I never!! James Watt ( the man who invented the steam engine ::) ::) ) okay he came up with a separate condenser, anyway, he came up with the idea whilst walking on Glasgow Green, he also went to Glasgow University, no not the new one ( well newish ) the old one which sat on the High St.

Hell! James Watt probably had a drink in the old college bar :)

Everyday's a school day, funny thing is I was reading about Darwin and ended up researching Watt. :o

It will be nice to have Rhiannon back too, when she has had her break.  No rush or pressure if she is reading, but she is missed too.

She had some home stuff to do that was going to take up a lot of time.  I'm sure she'll be back when she's finished.

Honestly I don't know any more than I've said, floo.  No details.  However Gordon said (I think) that he thought/hoped she'd be back in a while.

I suppose one positive thing about no longer being a registered member is that there will be no personal messages to distract from other stuff.  She might look in though and will see that she's missed.

Just to say that I've been in touch with Rhi and that she is fine, and she appreciates the concern of others following her sudden departure. She urgently needed to make some space to deal with events in real life, so hopefully we'll see her back before too long.

Am on my first visit to Scotland since I was a kid. Am currently heading to Glasgow from near Balmoral - the sun is out and the views are glorious. Never realised how beautiful Scotland is.

Thanks NS - yes, I wanted to let the Scottish posters on here know that I was really impressed with Scotland and have enjoyed my bank holiday break. All the Scots so far are extremely friendly and helpful.

Never been to Glasgow before but looking forward to having a quick look around. The family and I are stopping at the Hilton in William Street before we head back to London tomorrow so if that's near any of you Scottish posters and you're free please do come by and I'll buy you a coffee - I know a pint is more appealing but unfortunately I can't buy you a pint what with being Muslim :)

If not - just consider this a hey in advance as I'm passing through your town (I haven't got there yet).

Oh floo, they are gorgeous little girls.  I saw them on the news today, it's wonderful that both survived the operation and they are doing so well.  I hadn't twigged they had been so premature as well as conjoined.

Gabriella, good that you are enjoying your holiday.   Scotland is lovely, you are lucky that the weather is fine for you too.

Hi

Just logged back. Ha,ha - centre of universe - Sorry Gonnagle - I just read this. I have to be honest - I loved the Scottish country-side but from what I saw of Glasgow city it seemed not much different to London. I was only there for one night so I did not get time to look around properly. The Scottish people I met - so nice. You and NS are good representatives of Scottish folk.

They seem to say "folks" a lot in Scotland.

Dear Septic toe,

Shut up :P :P

Dear Gabriella,

Not much different from London, I have never heard the second city of the Empire described as such but maybe that is why I like London so much, I do feel at home in that city, strange thing is on the odd trips to Edinburgh I feel totally alien :o

When I went to the fridge this morning I found a mosquito in there. Usually flies etc.. that get catch in the fridge are all sluggish cause the cold but this mosquito flew out at grease lightening. I chased it round the room (hours of fun) but I never managed to kill it, even though the warmer temperature seemed to make it fly more slowly - well, that's old age for you!!!

I am just about to set off to catch the Paddle Steamer Waverley for a days cruise around the Isle of wight. The historic steamer spends most of it's life somewhere around Glasgow I understand, so I imagine it will be familiar to a few people on this board.

Nice bit of prose there, floo, had the intended effect on me.  I felt a bit of a shiver go down my back.  There was a film on TV last night, ITV, 'United 93', concerning a hijacked plane that was diverted by the passengers from crashing into the twin towers on 9/11; of course it did crash somewhere else and there were no survivors.  The film was a tribute to the passengers. I saw quite a lot at the beginning and at the end of the film and it was very, very moving.

Jack - "... that's old age for you!!!" - on the contrary, your mosquito sounds as though it's extremely youthful!

We went to Whitstable last week, stayed for a couple of nights.  It was extremely relaxing and very good for both of us.  The hotel was lovely:
http://crescentturner.co.uk/

When we sat out and looked at the view from the terrace before leaving on Friday, both wished we had another day.   The restaurant is excellent too, we ate there on Wednesday night and Thursday lunchtime.

Still we had to get back for our cats, one of whom has end stage renal disease and was looked after by our vet.  She was fine when we got home, quite perky and glad to go out in the garden.  None of the four have left us alone since we've been back.  My neighbour told me our big male cat, Thomas, whom he was feeding, was "Very polite"  :D.
