Ah - so it is a synonym for 'awareness': I wonder what was wrong with 'aware(ness)'.

Goodness knows. The term 'wicked' is now used as a term for something good or exciting! ::)

It's often used in a pejorative sense as PC Brigade was to suggest that the 'awareness' has perhaps gone a bit far into a caricature of what the aim is. In 5 or so years 'woke' has gone from being something self proclaimed and congratulatory to mostly a mocking usage.

That's how long "wicked" has meant "good".

I just meant "wicked" has been used for years in that sense - but as NS has seen fit, very cruelly imo, to point out how ancient I/we are I suggest we say no more about it.

;D I have to say I thought the same.  Twenty, thirty years ago - maybe more - 'wicked' (spelt 'wikid'), was a buzz word. You don't hear it much now but you would hear youngsters saying, "Wikid or what!" if they liked something.

LR I expect you consider all that to be minging.

I know that.  ::) I didn't say it was a new term, I was just pointing out like word 'woke', 'wicked' is used in a way these days that is far from its original meaning.

The vernacular is ever changing. I wonder what the next 'new' word will be.

That could be the basis for a new thread - giving new meanings to old words.

I get irritated when the parcel delivery drivers expect a person to open the door the second they ring the bell. I am usually upstairs as my bedroom acts as my study too, so it takes me about 30 seconds or so to get to the door, by which time the drivers are knocking on the neighbour's door to see if they will take the parcel in.

The problem is that many of them are private contractors and to make any money from delivering they have to deliver an enormous number of packages. Every second they are waiting contributes to a very long working day.

But by the time they have knocked on a neighbour's door asking if they will take in the parcel, then dropped a note through my door telling me where it is, they would have been long gone if they had waited a few more seconds for me to get to the door.

If you're offered a choice of deliverer when ordering online, go for Royal Mail, rather than one of our so-called competitors. We ain't perfect, but we're better than that.

We have never been given a choice, unfortunately, otherwise I would go for Royal Mail.

I saw a car with BLUE headlights today, it didn't look like an emergency vehicle. My daughter said they are a fashion trend, but the police could pull them in as they aren't legal here in the UK.

I'm reading 'English Villages', by F.R.Banks. In the historical introduction, he makes an interesting point: that villages were usually named, not by their inhabitants, but by their neighbours  The inhabitants of a village would just call it "the village", or something similar, but their neighbors might call it "Northton" or "Southby" or something, to distinguish it, so that they could say things like "I'm going to Northton market".

We have lived in two English Villages, Pilsley in Derbyshire, our first home 50 years ago, and Paddock Wood in  Kent, which I believe is now a town. We have lived in three villages in Wales, our present one is quite small.

Phone rang. Automatic voice said: This is British Gas. Press any key.' (I don't think it said 'please'.)
Put phone down, rang free (to the blind) Directory Enquiries and got put through to British Gas.
Remained silent through all prompts, so got through to a person in the end. Asked if this was a scam.
Girl (with slightly foreign accent, and who kept speaking quickly so I had to request a slower repeat half the time, located my file and said that it was a meter reading request.
I pointed out that the meter has been located outside the house for many years and can be read without access to the inside of the house.
She: But we don't come and read meters now. Have you got a smart meter:'

I then sighed and explained that they, British Gas, had come to install one about a year ago, found I didn't have the right kind of electric meter so it couldn't be done. Southern Electric installed suitable meter. British Gas came back, bringing a meter that wouldn't fit. Proper ones not available.
No word from them since!!

The girl made an appointment for new meter to be installed on Saturday, when the meter will be read.  I'm not holding my breath!!
I also asked her to register a complaint about having such scam-like automatic phone cals.
