My Census form has been completed on the phone. No problems there, and I have no objection to being asked about my sexual orientation! However, I was slightly flummoxed by the options: straight, heterosexual and two others. Could someone please tell me what is the difference between straight and heterosexual?!!
I opted for heterosexual, but it really doesn't matter one way or the other - I'll certainly be dead before the next Census and no-one who knows me would think I was anything unusual!!
ETA Curiosity killed the cat, so I looked it up! Straight means attracted to the opposite sex only in a sexual or romantic way. Heterosexual means you are attracted to the opposite sex only, but leaves out the romantic bit, for which the word 'hetero-romantic' is required apparently!
And well, imagine that - I've lived all my 85 years without even thinking of such nuances of meaning.
