Some of you may know, that many years ago now, I worked in Poland for 8 months. Fascinating experience.
But, I was reminded today of something that still makes me smile, and that is the sign you saw hanging up everywhere which was this:
"Uwaga pies"
My basic grasp of Polish when I first got there told me that Uwaga was usually a warning, the literal translation is "Attention". So my mind was thinking "attention pies". Low flying sausage rolls, etc.
Of course, I soon found out that "pies" is the Polish word for dogs. Which makes a lot more sense as a warning.
Still, I never quite shook the feeling when I saw the sign that I should be on the look out for dangerous Melton Mowbray pork pies.
