Just posted something. Also, it's working according to IsItDownRightNow.

Got to show you my new old watch, a 'Hebdomas' by the Swiss firm of Schild et Cie, made in the early 20th Century (I don't know more accurately than that). They were called 'Hebdomas' from the French 'hebdomadaire' meaning 'weekly', because that's how often they needed to be wound, by virtue of a an extra-large mainspring. I love the art-nouveauish look, and the visible balance wheel. Sorry the photos are a bit shit - my hands are too shaky these days.

Odd facts I've just discovered about 'Yesterday' by the Beatles: although credited to Lennon and McCartney, it is in fact only by Paul. Furthermore, though the recording is credited to the Beatles, it is performed only by Paul, with backing musicians. It is one of the most covered songs ever, which is in line with my own experience: back in 1965, when it was released, I heard a cover version by Frank Sinatra, and another by someone else, before I finally heard the Beatles'/Paul's version. I discovered all that after reading the Wikipedia entry on the Beatles after watching the film 'Yesterday' yesterday on iplayer.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Richard Curtis is a writer of some stuff I really like, and some stuff I hate but  Yesterday was quite jolly.

Why do we say "Northern England/Scotland/Ireland", but "North Wales", and similarly with "South[ern]"?

So on FB I posted about Southerners not knowing what a cob is. A friend posted this helpful photo of the various names for a bread roll:

I'm not sure they are all describing the same item.

A lardie cake is many, many things, but a plain bread roll it is not!

Join the club Steve - I've been one for 6 years now (officially that is, of course unofficially it has probably been a lot longer).

Odd fact - "eleven plus two" not only equals "twelve plus one", it's also an anagram of it.
