I suspect we are seeing a big upsurge in reporting following Savile etc.

Originally, I got the impression that the increased reporting was of historic cases.  It appears that this is no longer the case.
Are your, or your friends'/relatives', garages, lofts or sheds full of unused DIY gear, sewing/knitting machines or fabric and haberdashery stuff?

Which doesn't really affect the point, greater awareness creates greater reporting. Plus since the figures are comparative and reports were ignored in the past then, even the same number of cases will be an increase.

It seems that child sexual abuse has always been around, but since the evil Savile scandal people are feeling more able to report it these days. My husband (68) was inappropriately touched by two different men, one an uncle by marriage, when he was about five.

NS, the point I was making is that which the NSPCC seems to be making; the number of historic cases being reported is dropping off - perhaps because they have now largely been reported.  The current increase is down to current cases of abuse, which is worrying as no-one seems to be learning lessons.

or as noted there is an increase in reporting and recording, against a baseline where it was under reported and recorded.

I doubt that we have taken much action that would be real reasons learned, I have not seen anything that is a major change but it is difficult to conclude anything from the figures.

The article says actual cases are probably falling but reporting has increased hugely.

Rhi, the person from the NSPCC who was interviewed on BBC Breakfast indicated that information from the police suggests that historical case reports are reducing, but that current case reports are increasing.

This is a direct quote from the article.

It is probable sexual offences are actually falling despite cases coming to light in recent years, he added.

I understood the whole piece to be as a result of the NSPCC's latest "How safe are our children' report (for 2015).  That report seems to say that
Quote
All 4 countries in the UK have seen the number of recorded sexual offences against children increase over the last year.
Key finding #1  http://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/research-and-resources/how-safe-are-our-children-2015/

When that is taken alongside the suggestion from Police figures that historic case reporting is now on the decline, how else would you understand the situation.  Remember, too, that these figures are for 2014 when the Savile situation was still fairly regularly referred to.

On the hand there are actual offences and on the other reported/ recorded one's. The suggestions is that while the first number is fall in, the % of those reported is increasing so that the second number is increasing
For example if 20% of 5000 case are reported that is 1000 but if 30%of 4000 are reported that is 1200
