Actor? Singer? Both? Neither?
« on: June 25, 2015, 03:29:00 PM »
I have just, by accident, heard Lee Marvin's rendition of "Wandrin' Star" from "Paint Your Wagon".

This has, IMO, got to be one of the worst songs ever recorded, especially by an actor with virtually no musical/singing talent.

What song would get your vote as the worst recording of a song sung by an actor ever recorded?

Dear old Kenny!

As a comedian he could hit targets that no-one else dared even aim at!

As a singer? No comment!

The song that George Clooney selected on Desert Island Discs on the basis that if you had to listen to it you hollow out your leg and make a canoe of it to get off the island

True - I have a CD of songs sung by Shatner and Leonard Nimoy - Spock knocks Kirk into a cocked hat as a singer - much the same as he did as an actor.

I believe when Marvin heard the recording for the first time, he burst into tears!  But it was a big hit, nonetheless.

Quite possible - it was, and, I suppose, still is, in its' way, unique.

Much as I find the record irritating - the man must have had balls of steel to even to attempt the recoeding.

This is the worst song ever recorded by anybody ever.  It's made all the more excruciated when you consider how good the source material is.

The song got to number 1;  but he never made another record.  The archetypal one-hit wonder!

I think there is something oddly sweet about the Lee Marvin effort. Perhaps because I heard it a lot as a child.

Yeah, same here. Paint Your Wagon always seemed to be on, and for all that Clint Eastwood may have been the technically more proficient singer, I'd sooner hear Lee Marvin's subsonic rumble over I Talk to the Bloody Trees any day.

I've just been looking it up and learnt that it went to number one in the UK for three weeks, keeping a popular music group from Liverpool at number two with a song entitled Let It Be.

And that is an achievement worth remembering.

😧

I've got an ear worm now , with "talk to the trees".

It has got a catchy tune.

I'm surprised Matthew has only just heard Lee Marvin and wandering star.

How did you manage that one, Matthew? I would have thought it would have been hard to avoid it 😉🌹

What I meant was that the music that I have on both my computer and my iPod are set to play in "Random" mode. This means that I can go without hearing a particular track for quite a while - 160GB of music takes fair while to play through and 'Wandrin' Star' hadn't come up for some considerable time.

I'll have you know that is the only song I can attempt and get anywhere near as 'good' as the original artist - fact! :-[
