Important issues facing society
« on: July 12, 2015, 04:16:29 PM »
The recent UK Budget included a number of issues, some of which I have included in the poll.  I have a further question in mind, but before I pose it, I'd like to see what others believe to be the most pressing issues, out of the ones I've chosen, that face the UK at present.
Are your, or your friends'/relatives', garages, lofts or sheds full of unused DIY gear, sewing/knitting machines or fabric and haberdashery stuff?

You surely have to include health, which affects us all so critically, and because the Health Service is in such difficulty.

You should include the constitution or even existance of the 'uk'
Most of those named issues are not UK wide issues, but devolved matters, and therefore not subject to UK legislation.

I can't vote. It seems to me that you can't divide education from employment, or employment from health, or health from housing.

And you don't mention sustainability or community.

Unfortunately, the Government doesn't see it your way!   But to be fair, any Government has to prioritise;  it's just a matter of whether they do so in an objective and informed, and sympathetic, manner.

May I start by apologising.  I thought I'd set the poll to permit 2 votes but it seems that I haven't!!  Despite having been here for several years, this is the first poll I've ever set up!!  I've asked the Mods to amend this - I don't seem to able to do so.

To answer Jim's post, all the issues in the poll impact on all parts of the UK.  This has nothing to do with legislation, devolved or otherwise; it has to do with social issues that impact on each one of us.

Once the Mods have corrected the mechanics of the poll, I'll reset all votes to zero and get all who have voted to re-vote.

Just seems like a random and not particularly thought out set of choices. Suggest you add 2 others and ask people what they might be.

However, different governments approach certain issues on the list in different ways, and with different degrees of power.

Can I vote again, if my "health" vote was not recorded?

I don't think poverty was mentioned, which it seems, is about to increase under Osborne's measures.  For example, the IFS estimates that 3 million families will lose 」1000 a year.

It now allows for 2 votes so I've reset the counts to zero

A number of people have mentioned that X or Y ought to have been included.  My original list was about 20 issues long, so I decided to restrict the options to those things that either lead to something like poverty (see wiggi's post) or are overarching issues - so constitutional issues and the like are too specialised for my purposes.

The national debt and health are the most important, imo.

However, surely the government's austerity policies - which have driven many disabled people to suicide - are indicators of the direction in which they wish the 'uk' to go, and are therefore relevent to any list?

Jim, I've tried to go for issues that can be thought of - though aren't necessarily - as underlying many of the issues that other posters have raised. However, I'll add a 10th option - None of the above

NS, as I've already said, I've thought this out pretty carefully.  I have trimmed down my original list, and used topics that we have discussed on the board over the past couple of months (though not all of them) for reasons I've already outlined.

I don't have a particular pair of issues in mind, but am hoping that 2 out of 5 or 6 will come out at the top.  Once the poll ends I have a follow-up thread in mind, which I won't explain now.

Might suggest that saying you have thought about carefully is only true for you and since you are asking about others it's a bit fatuous. Apparently fox hunting which is devolved for Scotland is overarching but the constitution isn't. As Lionel Bart would have it I think you better think it out again
