Lost Rivers

A fascinating article on the BBC website about some of the rivers that once flowed through London, but now flow under it

Do many other UK towns and cities have such buried watercourses?  Cardiff certainly has at least one canal feeder channel still flowing under it.

Yes, I read the same article. I love the idea of Buckingham Palace and its neighbours getting bulldozed to make way for a river restoration.

In all seriousness, it'd be nice if something could be done to bring one of them back to life, if only to feed a fountain or other feature.

The Molendinar burn in Glasgow is effectively covered over now having like the Fleet become for much of it an open sewer.

Some of the lost rivers appear as characters in Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London fantasy series of books.

In Hull there used to be a stream which ran right into the city centre. Its course can be found on old maps. Its origin was a spring on the outskirts of Hull, which during the early Middle Ages was fought over by warring factions from nearby villages. In more recent times the spring was capped, pumps were installed and the underground water was used to service Hull and the surrounding area by the Yorkshire Water Authority. The pumping station is now a museum(which I have visited). The location of this stream can be found in the names of two major roads leading into Hull called Spring Bank and Spring Bank West.
