belief vs faith vs broccoli
« on: October 06, 2015, 03:14:46 PM »
So I am as certain as I can be that we can't choose what we believe, but I was wondering if 'faith' was different.

Is it like broccoli?  you can't choose to like it... but you can choose to eat it, because its good for you. Notwithstanding the scientific evidence that establishes the nutritional value of broccoli, is choosing to eat like faith? and being a little bit sick in your mouth when you do like belief?

And if that is the case is it possible to have faith in god - that he works in the world and we need his saving grace or whatever - without actually believing he exists for sure?
A lot of people don't believe that the loch ness monster exists. Now, I don't know anything about zooology, biology, geology, herpetology, evolutionary theory, evolutionary biology, marine biology, cryptozoology, palaeontology or archaeology... but I think... what if a dinosaur got into the lake?

You'd need to be convinced God is good for you. You'd need belief for that.

By the way, put the broccoli in a cheese sauce. That'll sort it.

My son's favourite veg is sprouts. We all love broccoli. It's nice in soup with a bit of stilton.

(is this on-topic it not?...)

Doesn't Broccoli produce belief in 007?

No, and no.  It is more like the slow development of a relationship with another human being.

But a relationship with another human being is someone you can see, hear and touch! Only a liar would claim that for a relationship with the deity!

The problem with that claim, Floo, is that I was likening something with something else.  I wasn't saying that they were identical in nature.

But how can you possibly have a 'relationship' with a deity you can only believe to exist, but cannot prove its existence?

I've been in a long-term relationship with John Daniels of Tennessee.

Once I've understood what you have said, I must ask you to explain how I have abused anyone in that post.  See, below:

abuse
verb
use (something) to bad effect or for a bad purpose; misuse.
treat with cruelty or violence, especially regularly or repeatedly.
speak to (someone) in an insulting and offensive way.

I think of Faith as being more like celery. It looks like a nutritious vegetable, but it's mostly water and it takes more calories to digest it than are in it.

No, and no.  It is more like the slow development of a relationship with another human being.

But surely that is what follows. The decision still has to be made to begin that relationship, and then perhaps later to sincerely comit to it. I guess what I'm asking is whether in that moment of decision a definite belief in God doesn't matter so much as a faith. To borrow a biblical analogy, you don't need to know there is someone behind the door before you knock on it. You just need to have faith that there is.

I want to use the word trust... But I feel like in this community it carries so much unpleasant baggage that it is far too polluted to include. I mean I physically shudder at the memories. And you all know who I'm talking about, with the exception of ippy perhaps.
