I'm not sure what worries me more: that America can produce tools like Carson and Trump, or that that they only need to be that inept in order to get the nomination of their idiot brethren.

I think the world needs to be very worried if the Republican party gets into the White House, most of the candidates make UKIP's Farage look like a left winger!

I stand with Carson.

https://www.bencarson.com/issues

Let's see:

"Protecting Innocent Life" - fair enough, in and of itself, but clashes with his militantly pro-gun stance

"Balanced Budget" - A reasonable request, what's he going to do differently to Obama who has massively reduced the structural deficit?

"Education" - he says he values education, but then claims that evolution isn't real, and wants to remove any sort of standards to which schools can be held accountable, opening the pork-barrel for any sort of reality-denying drivel

"Keep Gitmo Open" - Illegal detention without trial, what could be more in keeping with the American idea of 'The Land of the Free'

"Health Care" - he's against it, it appears

"Keep Faith in our Society" - another of the deluded 'War Against Christianity' ranters, no-one is trying to remove the right to pray privately

"Russia and Lessons Learnt" - He recognises the threat of Russia and Putin, which is good; sounds a little gung-ho, but with no specific recommendations in here it's difficult to take a line on it.

"Protect the Second Amendment" - someone who claims to be so strongly pro-life should at least have qualms about the gun-culture in the US. The right of law-abiding citizens to own firearms is not fundamental to their liberty, the provision of a robust, independent public defender's office is fundamental to their liberty. Civilisations keep the peace through the law and the courts, not through posses. The right to own firearms is a valid point, but the circumstances under which they can be acquired, the types available for general purpose, and the conditions under which they can be kept are all open to review.

"Stand by Israel" - Israel needs allies and security, yes, but he could also have stood to speak on the actions of Israel and their illegal occupation of lands and territories in continued defiance of various UN resolutions which are exacerbating the local situation.

"The American People Deserve Tax Reform" - no real argument with the principles espoused here, I wonder what his actual suggestions are, but I like the idea.

Beyond that the man's on record as perpetuating the nonsense idea that the Second Law of Thermodynamics somehow invalidates evolution and the Big Bang, he's equated homosexuality with paedophilia and bestiality in slippery slope arguments about marriage equality but nothing highlights his lack of any real grasp of reality so much as his equating the Affordable Care Act with slavery.

The man's a tool, and as much as some of us worry that, along with Putin's Russia, the Americans are a threat to global security, that idiot in the Oval Office would make the possibility of economic collapse, an escalation of hostilities and a continued decline in America's education and health-care systems a virtual certainty.

But the Second Amendment states:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

The USA now has an army - a very large army - so the condition of the presence of a "well regulated militia" is now satisfied. This amandment should now be rescinded and the possession of firearms be very highly controlled. This may go some way towards avoiding the slaughter of 30,000 Americans each year.

If Carson proposed the removal of the Second Amendment it would more than counter the other inadequcies in his programme.

That large and well-armed military is part of the issue - the point of a 'well-armed militia' is so that the citizenry can defend themselves against the state's army, not (just) against external threats. I agree that some form of gun-control is necessary, and I'm strongly in favour of rescinding the 2nd amendment - other amendments have been rescinded when they were no longer suitable for the situation - but I don't advocate an outright gun ban, there are legitimate reasons to own and use firearms, from sport through hunting and cadets to historical re-enactments.

I haven't advocated an outright ban but the kind of restrictions that we enjoy in Britain. When I was in my school CCF we did target practice with .22 and .303 rifles and used .303 rifles (with blanks) on exercises and without any ammunition on parades.

I'm a little worried about real guns at historical re-enactments. Muzzle loaders? Wouldn't imitation guns be just as good?

I get that, that's the sort of thing I'd advocate myself, but as soon as you mention 'gun control' some of the more rabid independence-freaks presume you're going to ban all guns everywhere ever.

For the charging about bit on the field, but sometimes you get target ranges and things, opportunities for people to try a musket out, that sort of thing.

More Carsonisms

"Now what about the big bang theory, I find the big bang, really quite fascinating. I mean, here you have all these high-faluting scientists and they’re saying it was this gigantic explosion and everything came into perfect order. Now these are the same scientists that go around touting the second law of thermodynamics, which is entropy, which says that things move toward a state of disorganization. So now you’re gonna have this big explosion and everything becomes perfectly organized and when you ask them about it they say, ‘Well we can explain this, based on probability theory because if there’s enough big explosions, over a long period of time, billions and billions of years, one of them will be the perfect explosion. So I say what you’re telling me is if I blow a hurricane through a junkyard enough times over billions and billions of years, eventually after one of those hurricanes there will be a 747 fully loaded and ready to fly. Well, I mean, it’s even more ridiculous than that ‘cause our solar system, not to mention the universe outside of that, is extraordinarily well organized, to the point where we can predict 70 years away when a comet is coming. Now that type of organization to just come out of an explosion? I mean, you want to talk about fairy tales, that is amazing. And then even if you want to use their own scientific theories, you've got this mass spinning and then it explodes, in physics we have some called angular momentum and it is preserved, so it should be preserved in any orbit of anything that is affected by gravity around a planet, which means that everything has to traverse in the same direction. Well it doesn't. There are many planets that have satellites or moons that go in opposite directions so that doesn't work with angular momentum. And there are a whole series of things, what about all the debris from the billions and billions of explosions that were not perfect. Where's that? I mean we should be bombarded constantly by all this debris coming down, we're not seeing it. So there's a lot of things there that really require an enormous amount of faith and really what it boils down to is where do you want to put your faith? In Man or in God? Which one makes more sense? And I constantly say, now I'm a person of limited faith, I really don't have enough faith to believe that stuff that they say, I mean that is really beyond belief in terms of the number of coincidences that have to occur and the number of things that have to violate even their own principles in order for it to work."

The idea that the second amendment equips Americans to stand against their own army if need be is laughable. In any case, that is a modern rationalisation of the amendment. It was written in the days when there wasn't a standing army but there was a potential for a slave revolt. It was a guarantee to the slave states that the federal government wouldn't stop them from doing whatever was necessary to keep the slaves quiet.
