People in need.
« on: October 21, 2015, 04:49:14 PM »
There has been a thread on here about the migrant crisis;  and as we all know, that has dominated the news for months now.. yet today I saw an advertisement on tv  -  I'm sure all will have seen it often, as it has been on for a long time, and it's by by Save the Children, and it appeals on behalf of African children.  It appears that some 19,000 a day die from drinking polluted water, and other, related disease:  that is, one every five seconds.  This has been going on as long as one remembers.  So, why doesn't this equally disastrous (or more so) situation, not receive the same out-pouring?  According to the Telegraph, today, some 1,750 migrants have died this year, so far.  That hardly equates with the astonishing 19,000 African children, daily!

False dichotomy, the coverage is not just about numbers dying. It's about the reasons and effect.

While we are talking about people in need, how about the people suffering from domestic abuse? The cuts to services are horrifying.

I agree: it is despicable and unjustifiable.  But when 19,000 children are dying daily, and it merits no mention, let alone action, then I am left speechless!

Except as Seb Toe's link shows it isn't true that there is no action. There is ongoing constant action on this.

Enough action? A child dying every 5 seconds?  No hurried meeting of EU Ministers; no urgent newspaper appeals;  no 24-hour tv coverage.  It is an immense human catastrophe, but Joubert's penalty decision gets huge coverage whilst children lie down to die, every minute!!

And because it is a constant problem it doesn't get the publicity. BTW Seb's link does not bear out your numbers which I think are about deaths from hunger as well.

I've gift aided to water aid for over 10 years now and there are frequent campaigns. The current govt made at least the effort to get aid up to 0.7 % of GDP as was recommended in the Brandt report over thirty years ago. Do we do enough? No but it would be better if instead of playing victim trumps as you are doing in the thread you linked to stuff like Seb did about how help can.be given.

The figures I quoted are from the Save The Children advert, as I've said already.  The Aid given by the Government is to cover all over the world, and when given, it seems they then have no control as to how it is used;  I stand to be corrected there.

Help cannot be given unless the need is stressed, and repeatedly and in detail, as it has been over the migrants.  That has only gained such public sympathy because of the massive coverage, and the pin-pointing of personal tragedy.  I am simply saying, the problem in Africa needs to be aired more widely; then more concern may be aroused.

It's not just Africa; we sponsor a child in Bolivia.

Right; but I have simply been trying the highlight the need in Africa, where it is so severe.

From Save the Children 2015 report.
Figure relates to world, not Africa though!
Still tragic nevertheless.

Every day, 17,000 children die before reaching their
fifth birthday.

Same report from 2013

While child mortality rates have declined in recent
decades, 19,000 mothers still mourn the loss of a child each
and every day

Cheap shot, on a serious thread like this.  Shame!
