Just astounding

Keep your fingers crossed for the next two years - I will be doing so.

Very good news indeed if that progress can be sustained. Thank goodness for human ingenuity, no good on relying on prayers to the flipping deity to be answered positively when someone is seriously ill! >:(

Amazing... the mind boggles at the potential for what medicine could look like in a couple of decades.
A lot of people don't believe that the loch ness monster exists. Now, I don't know anything about zooology, biology, geology, herpetology, evolutionary theory, evolutionary biology, marine biology, cryptozoology, palaeontology or archaeology... but I think... what if a dinosaur got into the lake?

Indeed. The family in my sig line are hoping that their son might one day get a new bowel created from stem cells - he was born without any bowel at all and survives on artificial nutrition, which is very far from ideal. Apparently a trachea for transplant has already been created this way, and it's a dream option for bowel surgery.

Of course I don't believe God invented cancer (he doesn't exist), but Christians do.

As a Christian who believes God created everything, you must believe he invented cancer. Aren't you pleased that some scientists have thwarted a small part of his evil plan?

I think many cancer victims bring it on by their own life-style.  Whose fault is that then?

God, if you believe in one. If you're a theist (as opposed to a deist) you believe that God created everything, yes? If you believe in an omnipotent God, nothing exists without God willing it to exist. If such a thing as cancer exists, the theist has to choose from one of three possible options:

     God knew in advance that creation would contain such a thing as cancer and either created it, or didn't create it but willingly permits it to exist (actively malevolent);

    Knew/knows about cancer, wants to prevent it but is powerless to do so (benevolent but useless);

     Doesn't know anything about it (ignorant).

This is within a theistic worldview. If there are other options (for the theist), feel free to point them out.

Additionally, odiousness of victim-blaming aside, it's a remarkably hit and miss, random process - some people eat what they like, smoke like chimneys and drink as though it's going out of fashion and suffer few or no ill effects, whereas as Jeremy has just pointed out, small children fall victim to leukaemia and other appalling forms of cancer, some of whom die. Looks like random chance to me, over all.

Children bring about leukaemia by their life style, do they? That's an interesting way to try to deflect the blame from the person you think invented it.

Or indeed when my friend died of skin cancer at the age of 28, you, BA, are going down the route of blaming her. Just wow! I will just sit here and meditate on your empathy and Christian caring and what an advert you are for your beliefs.

I had (have, actually) sarcoidosis.  That's nobody's fault. In my case the Consultant felt that my immune system was compromised by living all my life amongst heavy smokers.  So, if there was any fault, it was the smoking.  God doesn't smoke, by the way.

How convenient.

The word 'again' implies that you've refuted it before. No problem: just post a link to the post or posts where you reckon you did so. Easy.

So then by the logic being applied here your god created it and therefore choose to inflict it on you.

You are talking out of pure ignorance now.  Sarcoidosis is a condition when your body develops little granulomas in reaction to your immune system being compromised by some outside source.  It is not a disease as such, and can be the result of any number of outside sources.  It is not a disease in the sense that say, pneumonia, is.  It is not "created, it is the result of unfortunate  reactions by the body.  Get your facts right!

We don't need a medical lesson to be able to expose the faulty logic at work here. Were/are these "unfortunate reactions by the body" created, or at least allowed, by the deity you purport to believe in, or not? It's a simple question so the answer should be equally so. If as I expect you merely try to deflect or dodge it yet again, as is your wont, we'll know that we're cutting close to the quick of some untenable and for you uncomfortable ideas.

Let's take this slowly as you appear to have been confused since jeremyp's original comment.

The suggestion is not that Jeremy or I think it is anyone's fault that cancer or indeed sarcoidosis exists but rather that in the idea of an omniscient creator as posited by many theists then logically that creator would be responsible for both cancer and sarcoidosis.

Now read that and confirm that you can understand it, rather than getting confused again and therefore presumably accidentally misrepresenting what is being said, and we can try and move on
