There seem to be lots of factors, including building on flood plains, but also removing trees and scrub on higher ground, which would hold back water (and the EU pay farmers to do this!); straightening of rivers higher up, which speeds up water flow; cuts to environment budgets - this is hotly debated now, as obviously the government don't want to admit that this has happened; climate change; and this year, probably, El Nino, which apparently is a whopper.

Ah well, every year, the politicians swear that they are going to spend more money on flood defences, and every year, it turns out that they didn't, and every year, there are floods.

And then there's the fact that the Tory government pledges to be the green party of environmental stewardship living up to European standards of clean, green and renewable energy, and then slashes subsidies for environmentally-friendly measures such as solar energy.

But God forbid this should be a political discussion. Who would want that?

Ironically, the last year has actually seen real-term increases - the problem with the figures that Labour quoted earlier in November was that they included the costs of the clean-up and remedial work, especially in Somerset, which may or may not prove to have been necessary, that had to beeen pumped in 11/12 months ago.

Politicians lie.  Not all the time, but quite often at crucial times.  Vote blue to go green - that was a good one.

Politicians lie.

What is this foolishness? When did this start?

Anybody complaining about the unduly mild winter in many places so far will be pleased to know that the forecast predicts a cold start to 2016, with temperatures at or slightly below average for the time of year.

Storm Henry is sweeping across the British Isles and by the evening many places are forecast to have gusts of between 70 and 90mph - worst in the north of England and Scotland -, so it pays us all to take a bit of extra care if out and about. Damage is almost assured and disruption expected, so be careful.

I have nearly been blown over a few times on my walks today! When driving it was not easy to control the car when gusts hit it! The last time I remember it this windy was in 1987, when we had the hurricane, which wasn't a hurricane!

Having said that I haven't seen any damage, fingers crossed!

Got a bit chilly after 1630, so I put the sun lounger away and went in doors.

It's always a bit warmer here in the South East Floo.

It was fairly windy in London yesterday but not unpleasant, temperature quite mild.  I've just gone out to the front of the house and the sky is quite dark, the wind seems the same as yesterday (so far) and there has been some rain.  It's not cold really.

Floo, I didn't know the hurricane of 1987 wasn't really a hurricane!   I suppose it's all relative.  By British standards it certainly was.

When the sun was shining yesterday it was quite warm, in spite of the wind. It was 23C in my husband's study yesterday afternoon, without the heating on!

Well in our Orangery______

Ehhhhhhhhhh?

A whacking great big conservatory that's big enough to grow an orange tree in and still have room for all of the family, kiddies too.

I'm surprised that one didn't know about these things.

Dear Floo,

Ours is, and I kid you not, there's a lad out the back court who is building some kind of big boat, he is also asking punters if they have any spare sheep or goats, I think he knows something I don't.

All I'm trying to do is have a gentle pull of the leg, doesn't look like it's worth the effort; mind you my wife has just got back from NZ and the NZ situation mirrors Wales in some ways, with the mountains mainly on the west coast pushing the warm air up to the cold where it condenses into rain just like Wales and she's had three weeks of rain in NZ in a similar way that the Walesonions have to sit there and bear it like the NZders have to as well and both for a lot longer than we have to here in Essex.

Not that I would want to exaggerate or labor the point to much but I thought it was worth making the point about the weather, being just that bit better in the home counties, such as Essex being the driest.

Well, at least we in Wales have plenty of water to drink and grow produce with   ;)

On a different, but still weather-related matter, I trust that no-one has sffered at the hands of Imogen.

I have not been reading this thread, but a friend phoned me today to say that she had seen film news of Barton-on-Sea - from where you can glance across to The Needles - was on BBC news because of the gale force winds there.
