I got into work ok this morning, I don't think that I could have taken any more daytime TV.

Snowing again. It rained earlier so now everywhere is a soggy, cold mush.

Well, at the moment I'm feeling slightly smug! I needed to go to the bank and pick up my prescription and I could have put it off until tomorrow, but by 12.0 o'clock the rain was gone and so I have walked down the road  and done that. Fairly strong wind, but not freezing.
It's swimming this afternoon, but I go there and back by taxi.

No further snow today, though what fell yesterday understandably isn't going anywhere as it's 0°. And the sun is out so everywhere looks charming. Could be a trickier proposition tomorrow, as the forecast predicts a low of -10° overnight.

Susan;
As a matter of interest, what kind of tip do you use in snow or ice?
I use the jumbo roller on my graphite cane, for what it's worth.
It's slightly betterr than the rest of 'em.

Definitely stopithom weather here, thank goodness I'm retired and don't need or have to go out and the central heating system is all brand new, it's that wet through rain within five paces of stepping out and really freezing as well.

I too drove to work with no problems, I didn't have a very early start today& was there in no time. I think a lot of people hadn't turned out, judging from the traffic. The snow had cleared, it was raining. Later on there was sleet and a bit of snow which stopped fairly quickly. Brrrr, cold.

Floo so sorry to hear about your accident.

For the moment, I am still using my peripheral vision and so in my right hand I use a walking stick which is white. It is collapsible and has a clip, which is useful when putting it in a locker at the gym, plus my telescopic signal cane in my left hand. Since I have an age-related cataract in my eye which is causing some increasing impairment, I might well have to get a sweep stick, but not yet. When I do, I'll check with you about suitable tips.
Here on the south coast ice is not such a problem, but I go by taxi if I am in doubt.

Having to slowly regain my leg and hip strength after being knocked down, and having to deal with the added complication of that immobility showing up my  extremely dodgy left hip - not a problem before hand because of my fitness, even though the pelvic cracks healed in a normal amount of time, means that my balance is not quite as good. this, again, is not a problem as long as I remember it!

So many people I know have fallen - in their own homes - and broken their hips, so I am absolutely going to make sure I don't do that.

Somewhere in Shropshire reached -13° in the early hours; here it's barely above freezing during the day. However rain is forecast to set in tonight to wash away the snow and ice, and with it a modest rise in temperature.

Quite mild here today. I came home early because a man was booked to fix roof tiles, I was hoping for his sake the weather would be OK so was pleased. Job done, roof is sound.

Today has been a much warmer than of late. We were able to turn the heating off for a few hours.
About an hour ago I stepped outside the door and although it was very gloomy, it was dry.
15 minutes ago, I put on coat, hat etc locked the door stepped outside ... and there's a damp misty drizzle, so I'll try again later.
I can't manage walking in any kind of rain for more than a short distance.

I went to General Discussion to find this thread, but see that that board seems only to have a few posts on it. Can anyone tell me what has happened?

When you were at school, weren't you (directed at anyone "puzzled" by weather conditions) taught - possibly in 3rd form Geography about the consequences of the British Isles' location (on the eastern side of the second largest mass of water on the planet, at a latitude of about 50 degrees north, with no significant landmass to the west) on its climate and subsequent weather?

Cool summers and mild winters with rainfall and dampness at all times of the year.

Can you explain why whenever I even travel into a westerly direction it's as though someone is watching and the heavens open up, I've been to the west country on about a half dozen times and I can assure you it's just as though someone is watching my movements, one summer I went there an we had about two inches of hailstones fall and at the same time both my, young then, boys and my wife went down with mumps about as bad as it comes, fortunately I have had it before and the antibodys were still active.

Don't even suggest another holiday anywhere in the west of the U K to me or mine, yes even though, and I agree, there are some lovely places to visit. Precipitation is the theft of a good holiday.

All that practice I had, all those years ago of sliding on ice in the school playground paid off this morning as I negotiated the black ice on our street. Stayed on my feet, even though I did slide gracefully down the road a few times. Safe indoors now. Very smug.

I flew back to East Midlands from the Channel Islands yesterday. The air was clear and largely cloudless so we had a good view of the ground below.

What was particularly interesting was the very patchy nature of the snow, it appeared to be scattered rather than a blanket. On our approach to EMA much of - what I presume to be - Warwickshire and south Leicestershire was white but the airport was snow free. And my drive to Worcestershire  was similarly patchy.

I am such a wimp, won't even try to negotiate our pavement at the moment. Luckily I can walk in the road (relatively ice free) the few yards to the tractor access to the fields and then the dog and I are free. Last night we walked just as the sun set, the moon had risen over the village behind us and the snow was opalescent as the light faded. Absolutely magical.

Considering we were supposed to have had fog with very poor visibility today, it is quite pleasant, the sun is peaking through the clouds.

Snow started here last night, and has continued most of today. "Thundersnow" appears to be the term of the moment. A lot of roads are blocked, schools were closed early, and high winds are causing drifts. My back door has four steps. I can only access one of them; that means there's at least a foot of snow thetre at the moment...and it's still snowing quite heavily.
