I've been sitting outside this evening and it was cold enough to need a cardigan. First time since May I think.

I know we are in for a few hot days yet but the year's turning.

After a pleasant cooler start to the day, it is beginning to warm up now.

Averaging out 35 here today, two minutes of that's enough for me, can't be walking the dog, poor dog's a black one, I'll be walking her out after 7 tonight when it's a bit cooler for her.

Incredible news ... rain tonight from about 6pm.  And then temperatures of about 28C instead of 36C.

It's mad, isn't it? 30 and baking sunshine all day today, 23 tomorrow, and Thursday it'll be 18 with torrential rain all day. 18! The nights haven't been that cool lately.

Ippy, I really think you need to get a better set of thermometers.

Ippy, I really think you need to get a better set of thermometers.

Yes it does seem to be like that I did refer to calibration in another post because these temperatures seem to me to be rather high, I feel inclined to agree with you.

My back garden faces app SSE from the house, with 2 m high fences on both sides and the sun is in the garden all day plus something I hadn't thought about until living here for a few months my place is a bungalow and they don't shade the garden anywhere near as much as a house with a first floor usually they're about a 9 m high sun shade as opposed to app 3.6 m bungalows worth of sun shade.

The garden is no doubt about it a sun trap, having said that the sensors I take my reading from I wouldn't have thought were any more than about one or two degrees out.

Just had a look outside I have an old mercury thermometer showing 89 f and one of the sensors I use is nearby this is showing 33.1.

I like things to be accurate I'll be checking, more for my own satisfaction, if I find a discrepancy I'll let you know exactly how much but going by the old technology comparison I've just made I don't think the readings will be very far out.

Sod the thermometers it's bleeding hot out there, too hot for me.

Are they in full sun in the shade? What height are they at? What is the surface below them? All things which can affect the measurements.

Ippy, I really think you need to get a better set of thermometers.

Never mind the thermometers, my old barometer (from car-boot sale) dipped to 1008 this week. First time it's been below 1010 since May. Windy and wet suits me after all this time.

This is not wrong. A few weeks ago I bought a weather station (not the most high-end model in the world but I've always wanted one - weather + gadgets; what's not to love?) and placed the sensor outside. Even at the height of the heatwave the base unit was recording temperatures more suited to the surface of Mercury - the sensor isn't supposed to be in direct sunlight.

There's three sensors spread out in various places in the garden I go for the average reading of all  three one on the fence doesn't get the sun till after twelve noon at the earliest, the second one is on the facing fence behind my greenhouse in the shade soon after twelve noon and the third one is on the side of my workshop nearer to the house in the shade from about twelve onwards

The old mercury one is close by the second sensor in the shade both of them.

I've had this weather station with it's three sensors for some years now, it even shows the phases of the moon, barometer showing tendencies up or down, radio controlled clock, humidity, it's not a cheep and cheerful jobbie.

Everybody ignores me and walks off at home here if I try to relate any of the info it gives?

There's a lot of well sheltered reflected heat here it's always just that degree or so warmer any time of the year out at the back of the house and oh yes all sensors are residing atop grass and general garden greenery too.

I will be cross checking the accuracy of the sensors, just to keep myself happy, regardless of anyone else.

Official temperatures are of "air temperature" not direct radiation temperature. They should always be made in the shade, preferably in a Stevenson screen, a white painted box with downward sloping slots.

There was a thing recently wasn't there, about a weather station in Death Valley that isn't accurate because it records radiated temperature.

Grrrrr ....

Thick black clouds last night ... The temperature dropped noticeably, the air was definately cooler.

BUT

No storms and not a drop of water fell from the sky. The world remains brown and parched.
