The same is the case with our Northern relatives who have never had air conditioning.  Seems now they can't live without it. And, then, there were my grandparents who lived in the house my grandfather built them 1937. I never had A/C (or an indoor bathroom at first!)  It was a "shot-gun" style home common in the South where an open front and back door would allow the natural breeze to clear the whole house in a few minutes.  I grew up in the more modern concrete-block, single-story home that was never built for a good open-window cross breeze.  And, I do remember hot, sweltering nights.  I suppose acclamation is the key, regardless of where we are.

In the case of most if not all terraced housing the straight through to the back door has more to do with maintenance, when you open the front door and walk straight through past the stairs straight across the kitchen and without needing to turn to either way straight out of the back door, think about it, as if you were carrying a ladder.

In about 1960-62 I was doing some work in a small terraced house in Tottenham North London, a straight through hallway etc as I've described above the person  living there at the time, at the finish of their days work they brought their pony home and walked it straight through the house into their back garden, I could hardly believe it but there it's another use for being able to go in a straight line from the front door the the back door.

Regards, ippy.

One minute the sun is shining brightly, the next it is tipping down with rain, there is a very brisk breeze too.

Very sunny, but the fresh breeze makes it feel cooler than the outdoor thermometers would indicate. I got all my washing dry. :)

Good weather here. Perfect for the start of my holiday. Three weeks off work, so going for walks, eating good food and maybe a bit of whisky tasting.

It was dull all morning, but very mild with hardly any breeze, it is brightening up a bit now.

I think we must have had at least a month's worth of much needed rain this morning.

I enjoyed reading your story, ippy.  (Sorry for my delay.  I'm still trying to figure out the lay of the land here, so to speak. :) )

We're overcast here and heavy rains are predicted.  The third named tropical storm is moving in the Gulf.  First time I can remember three named storms before hurricane season is officially here.

Very wet and windy today, it feels like winter rather than summer. :(

No rain here yet though it's overcast and getting darker after being dull all day so expecting a sudden downpour. Had pleasant bike ride with my 'household' & picked up couple of bits of shopping on way back.

Weather here has been consistently gorgeous.  Just enough rain to keep everything lush, green, and blooming, and not too hot (for Florida.)  The crepe myrtles are blooming now.  There are five of them.  Three have white blooms, one is a graft of white and dark pink, and the other is all dark pink.  The cats are loving the back porch now.  It's screened in, so they can enjoy the heat, the fresh air, the birds, squirrels, and the one raccoon visitor (oh, and our ferrel cat friend) without physically going outside.

Quite a breezy day, which got my washing dry by lunchtime. :) I am not looking forward to the predicted heatwave, I will be wishing it would snow.

Similar here, about to get mine in. I was at work and temp not unpleasant in my office. Feels like there might be a storm later. My old man's mowing lawn, it certainly needed it.

Sunshine and heavy showers today, with a breeze. The temperatures are in the high teens, so much more bearable than the last few days.
