Funeral costs

Cremation should be offered not burial as that is cheaper, and we are running out of burial space.

Nowhere like the situation in Greece where people are buried for 3 years, iirc, and then dug up and the bones stored in ossuaries attached to the cemetery.  Apparently one can pay extra for longer interment - up to 10 years, I believe.  Unfortunately, with their current financial situation, few can afford the minimal 3 years.

The other problem is that often 3-year interments haven't fully decayed!!

Non-religious funerals are rising as it is; there's a case to be made that the visibility of non-religious funerals of several high-profile people in relatively recent years (Ronnie Barker; Bob Monkhouse; Linda Smith; Dave Allen) has helped this process by making people aware that such an option is available. When somebody dies many if not most people are too busy with their grief to want to get stuck into the niceties of funeral planning, which is why there are still so many people content to sit back and let the local vicar step in and take the wheel even though the dear departed never darkened a church's door. Reading around non-religious funerals, one of the most common things said by those left behind is: "I didn't know we could." If there is such a thing as society, no decision no matter how seemingly personal is made in a total vacuum. You can't do anything for the dead aside from put a full stop to their life by giving them a send-off in keeping with it, otherwise you're pissing all over their integrity to give yourself a warm little glow.

We have provided several non-religious funerals at church. 

Over the years, we have been asked by people before they die to hold their funeral in the building because of associations they may have had with the place in their youth - or through groups who use the building but with no religious element to those group.

They don't even need to undress me.  They can just wrap me in plastic sheeting and stick me in the fridge till cooking day at the crem.

Apparently there are people who offer this service.  Though the price still looks expensive.

Wheelie-bins are quite commodious though.  But landfill or composting?

I've already registered to donate body parts, and after that give the rest to medical science if they can use it.

Mrs O. prefers the route of being cremated and having the ashes put into a sapling's root-ball for planting.

My 'instructions' in the event she's not around, for my kids are 'do whatever's cheapest' and remember what I was and don't fear for me now that I'm not.

This was my introduction to the world of traditional blues, and then jazz. It might not be everybody's cup of tea but I like it. Not sure about my soul living with God, though.
