Lucy Allan MP and the false death threat
« on: December 05, 2015, 06:06:02 PM »
There's quite a lot of coverage about death threats to MPs on msm but not so much on this.

I feel I should be shocked or dismayed but I'm not - she is a Tory MP.

They're only human and we shouldn't trust them. A sympathy vote gone sour!

Even if she was a member of that nasty party UKIP, that is not a nice sentiment! :o

Trent, I think Floo is trying to highlight the fact that MPs - whichever party they represent - are human beings and threatening death to another human being or a relation of a specific human being is unacceptable.  Perhaps you disagree.

Compare this with the comparable threats that some Labour MPs received voted in favour of bombing Syria in midweek.  Were they acceptable?

Whether this particular incident was a valid incident is clearly open to question - and I'd suggest that this MP was stupid to have done what she claims to have done - but the whole thing opens the bigger issue of MPs and other public figures receiving death threats.

Nope - none of it is acceptable. However if it had been a Labour MP making this particular error/misrepresentation do you think the Tory press would have been as quiet as they are about it with a Conservative MP - No they wouldn't. They would have summoned up their considerable bile and wrath from the safety of their tax havens and screamed for resignation.

I have no idea about what would have happened if it was a Labour MP, or UKIP, nor do I  really care. The issue to me seems to be that there are a lot of MPs and MP supporters shouting about abuse, much of which would one have been ignored, and when more serious issues such as death threats are devalued by being made up, then we are simply seeing a bit of band wagon jumping.

Calling someone a warmonger or responsible for the deaths of children for voting for bombing Syria, is incorrect and OTT, but isn't a threat or bullying. Social media means that we all get to see what was once said in meetings or in the pub, along with all the various protests saying exactly the same thing that were just taken as part of the process.

Even then there were lots of death threats, though most were ignored, as mere loons.

Having gone through the joy of the Independence referendum, I have seen the drive to create a narrative that one side is full of organised bullies, whereas 'our' side may occasionally get out of hand but they are rogue elements and anyway the other side started it. It's a specific and deliberate attempt to create an 'other' and deny the equivalency of any such death threats. If you add into that making shit up, then this is simply propaganda and is an insult to any MP who receives genuine threats.

The original email is hardly shocking and once would have been the subject of joking around the committee table on the basis that it's actually not badly written, has a speck of inventiveness and 'well they would say that'

You mean like Labour media always summon up their bile when Labour MPs make similar errors.

You gave the impression that because she is a Tory MP she deserved the death threat. If you didn't mean that I apologise.

NS, the MP's explanation states that she rceived a death threat in response to her response to the original - less than nasty - message.

Actually she doesn't say that. Rather she says she combined different messages received throughout the day. There is no indication that any death threat came from the individual she attached the edit of the email to.

Did I say that she had?  No.  That is why, in a previous post, I said "I'd suggest that this MP was stupid to have done what she claims to have done"

so again what actual death threat? 'Unless you die' in and of itself isn't a death threat. She may or may not have  received one but it isn't clearly stated by her in the article.

Which makes Floo's comment on trentvoyager doubly bizarre as it is not clear there is any death threat and no implication from his comments that there would be any approval from him.

What you mean the Mirror and.... er, well the Mirror.

Level of equivalence - practically zero.

I did not mean that - neither did my post state or imply it. Apology accepted.

Surely the post meant that Trentvoyager feels he should be shocked or dismayed that this MP has doctored someones email but isn't because she is a Tory MP, not a reference to the supposed death threat.

I understood from the article that she had received a death threat from someone, which she had tacked onto the end of the original message, thus making it appear that it had been there from the start.  In fact, I thought that was the reason why the whole thing became public.

Thank you Maeght - that is exactly what I meant. Perhaps if some posters took the time to read the OP they wouldn't jump to wrong conclusions quite so quickly. (Although I admit I am as guilty as others sometimes in that way - so I forgive Floo!)
