I remember as a child (strange though it now seems that I was once a child) getting roller skates when I was about 8 or 9 (so 1959/60) - but they were nothing like modern roller-skating boots.
For a start they were metal and you wore them over your shoes. They adjusted for length underneath using a wing-nut, and then there were leather straps to fasten over the toes and around the ankles. Invariably, after a day or two, either the leather frayed and broke or the wing-nut fell off and vanished forever - sometimes this happened during attempts to roller skate, adding some grazed knees and elbows to the fun (no sissy elbow or knee protection way back then).
