So . . .
« on: February 04, 2016, 05:19:49 PM »
So, why does everyone start a sentence with the word 'so' these days? Like the the rising inflection, it' suddenly everywhere! Not a single interview on radio or TV is free from the phenomena.

I mentioned that to one of my sisters the other day. I've been wondering why so many are using that word to start sentences. So, what's with that? I read it is used for conversation management. Whatever

Surely no different from starting a sentence with the equally meaningless and superfluous "Well ..."

Has to be an improvement on the dread "basically" though doesn't it?

How about "ah"? I just hate that one.
It's bad enough that our drama teacher PM pledged allegiance to the Queen's hairs, but listen to how he talks to us. I hate it!

I'm not saying that it is wrong - just that it seems to have sneaked-up from nowhere and has become ubiquitous. I noticed that my eldest daughter was using it the other day. I suspect that it is something they tend to pick-up from doing presentations at work.

It's far worse when it's used to finish a sentence. That really grates and you hear it all the time! Example...

"I had to nip into town at lunch to pick up some stamps sooooo...."
A lot of people don't believe that the loch ness monster exists. Now, I don't know anything about zooology, biology, geology, herpetology, evolutionary theory, evolutionary biology, marine biology, cryptozoology, palaeontology or archaeology... but I think... what if a dinosaur got into the lake?

Personally I think these 'meaningless' words are a form of paralinguistics. It's not so much what they mean as how they are said.

And?

Which adds meaning of course. But in the how and not the what.

Or is that me just stating the obvious? I thought paralinguistics weren't supposed to have a meaning as such but these words seem to have become them. Not that I know a great deal about linguistics.

In most languahges, there are words or 'sounds' that are used a space fillers or to cover uncertainty or thinking time.  I suspect that 'So ...' has become one of those.
Are your, or your friends'/relatives', garages, lofts or sheds full of unused DIY gear, sewing/knitting machines or fabric and haberdashery stuff?
