The only thing the story finally proves is that the Pope really does wear a big hat.

I must admit I didn't know there was a big problem.  Of course I know some of the history, schism and all that, but there doesn't appear to have been much of a problem that I know of.  The Orthodox people I've met on forums believe they were the originals!  Like any others, they differ between themselves - Russian, Greek, Eastern.  The Russians believe the Russian royal family, Romanovs, are saints and venerate them.

At my old school, which was Catholic, some Orthodox clergy came and said Mass in the chapel.  It was after my time but I was told about it and everyone was enthralled with the drama, quite a change from the usual Catholic 20mins-half an hour do!  Catholics are taught that they may receive the sacraments at an Orthodox church - but I was told quite firmly, on forums, that Orthodox may not be very happy about that!  So the way I see it, Catholics respect Orthodoxy and the Orthodox consider Catholics to be a sawn off second rate version  :D.  All seems silly to me but I don't practice anything.

Sorry if all this, or some of it, has been said but I couldn't open the link.
Let us profit by what every day and hour teaches us

I don't know about the orthodox lot, but the Catholic church wants to spend its time getting rid of the paedophile priest problem it has had for so long!

There is no reconciliation. That can only happen once Rome completely and utterly repents of all its errors. First Rome must confess the orthodox faith.

It was nice to see the fancy dress. I fear the eastern guy overdid it a bit and the Pope was a tad insipid.

Come on, Gonners, you can see as well as anybody else what a farcical parade of finery these religious moguls wear, just to impress and maintain the gullible in awe.

I gather that architects and engineers do it regularly.

He seems to think that of anybody who isn't ad_o, frankly.

I strongly doubt that ad-o thought of it himself ... he's just parroting what he's been fooled into believing. :)

Dialogue is fine but at the end of the day there are serious isdues thst need to be resolved first. Rome needs to repent of its errors first. The Patriarch will have made it clear as well. Rome doesn't even confess the same creed. How can there ve communion if they do not even confess the same faith?

No hope for the likes of you. Really no hope at all.

That phrase about two bald men squabbling over a comb springs to mind.

Still, while sentient creatures (humans amongst them) suffer horrifically, and millions go without food decent or un-decent, and little kiddies don't have clean water to drink without cholera-laden human shit in it, and families scrape together an existence scrabbling through the giant trash hills of Indian cities, you can worry yourself to sleep about whether the Father proceeds from the Son or the Son proceeds from the Father and other really, really, really important stuff about whether the church you used to think a couple of years ago was the final, absolute and unchangeable truth of God's revelation to humanity or whether the other church that claims exactly the same is this month, and consider it a good day of your life well spent. It's nice to be happy.

"Wants to" or "needs to?"  I fail to see what your statement, said in your axiomatical way, has to do with the reconciliation of Catholicism and Orthodoxy, floo.

Needs to.

The wanting seems to be somewhat lacking.

I didn't say they were the same. I said that they make as much sense. One argument got left in the Middle Ages where it belongs and the other didn't, but should have.
