Album Forming on a USB Stick?
« on: February 19, 2016, 10:53:46 PM »
I've been putting some music on a USB stick and there are a lot of pieces now and I'd like to sort them into groups or 'albums' instead of just having one long single 'album' list. Does anyone know how to do this?

I'm playing it on my hi-fi and it doesn't give the name of the tracks just album number and track number. I need to group the music to make it easier to locate them.

Usually you just put the songs in folders. Have you tried that?

I did try something, I think it was to leave it in the zip file but nothing showed on the hi-fi. I'll try the folder and see what happens - thanks.

Thanks Jeremy, that did the trick. I've always associated the folder file with documents/word files not music - a bit obvious once you see it, but you have to see it.

I have noticed that when you put a USB stick into a computer an icon comes up which has something about 'safe ejection'. I usually just pull the stick out (this post is not a joke) but when I put one of mine into my computer it came up with a box saying there was a problem with the last time I removed it (I save my stuff etc. and then close the screen with the contents listed in it before removing the USB)

Is there a safe or proper way in which to remove USB sticks? What is the clickable message of 'safe ejection' for? I've never had a problem before with these.

To improve speed, the operating system doesn't necessarily write things to disk (or a USB stick) straight away because that is quite slow. What happens is it keeps the data in RAM  and it eventually gets written to the disk.

Safely ejecting the USB stick means the operating system makes sure that all the data has been written to the disk and then tells you it is safe to remove it. If you just pull the stick out, you might lose some of the data and it might corrupt the file system on the stick as a result.

Having said that, it's very rare to corrupt a USB stick by pulling it out before you have safely ejected it. You are quite unlucky.

You can fix it by running the disk repair tool on it. You can stop it from happening again by always telling the computer to safely remove the stick before pulling it out. This is done via an icon is the system tray.

What you seem to be implying is that even though I form a file in the USB and write material in what I see as being in the USB domain it is in fact doing it on the RAM. After I save it etc. is the material saved on the computer as well even though I thought I was working inside the USB? If so where would it be stored?
