Asatru in Iceland
« on: March 14, 2016, 05:48:17 AM »

I know there was a thread on this a while ago, but it appears to have been culled - so . . .

The Holy Bible, probably the most diabolical work of fiction ever to be visited upon mankind.

Sounds interesting, Owlswing.

I wish I could go visit Iceland, but it's so expensive.

I thought Southern Ireland expensive, with Fish n Chips at £9.50 ( that was five years ago) but Iceland is even more pricey.

I would love to go, I would be interested in seeing the temple, as well as volcanoes which are an interest.

 :)

Perhaps one day.

Have you ever been?

I found this in the uk which might interest you ( although you may have come across it before )

http://www.odinisttemple.uk

It seems to be based around the same Gods as the one in Iceland.

Quote

Newark Odinist TempleAbout Odinism
Man is an intrinsically spiritual being, and all human societies have embraced one kind of religion or another. In these days, however, conventional religion has fallen into sharp decline, and our nation is at risk of being cast spiritually adrift. Yet the spiritual yearning remains...

This may explain why many today are examining our ancestral faith, the beliefs that flourished here among the Anglo-Saxons before the arrival of the first Christian missionaries. It is a religion, which though ancient, expresses far more clearly the spirit of the modern age, and is more in tune with contemporary thought and learning. So what is Odinism?

In olden days, when the world was younger, our forefathers honoured and worshipped many Gods and Goddesses. They offered their prayers and sacrifices to different deities for different purposes: there were Gods of peace and Gods of war, Gods to assist the farmer secure a good harvest, and Gods to aid the warrior in battle.

For help in childbirth Frigg, the queen of the Gods, might be invoked; in matters of the heart and love matches, Freya; and for rainfall in times of drought, Freya's brother, Frey; for protection from thunder storms, red-bearded, hammer-wielding Thor; for wisdom and magical knowledge, Odin Allfather, the chief of the Gods.

This religion, or spiritual belief system, which we now call 'Odinism', flourished before the arrival of Christianity in the north of Europe among the ancestors of the English: the Angles, Saxons and Jutes; but also among the many closely related tribes and nations of the Continent: Frisians, Franks, Hessians, Swabians, Thuringians, Marchmen, Burgundians, Danes, Swedes, Geats, Norsemen, Goths, Lombards and Vandals. In short, we are talking about the original and earliest religion of the Northland.

Our heathen, pre-Christian ancestors were not, as is sometimes imagined, uncouth barbarians without refinements or morals. On the contrary, not only did they prize the skills of poets and craftsmen, but they also extolled a noble and demanding code of ethics that gave its name to the Heroic Age. We Odinists today encapsulate it as the Nine Noble Virtues: Courage, Truth, Honour, Hospitality, Fidelity, Discipline, Self-Reliance, Industriousness, Perseverance.

If any of this strikes a chord with you, and if you too are a seeker after the truth, then, Friend, read on, and perhaps you will discover, as so many of us have done already, that without even realising it, you too are an Odinist!

That one is closer to me than Iceland  :)

Apparently it's due to be finished by the end of the summer.

This video might interest you.

http://youtu.be/_P4H-kk8r1U

It's all about the temple.

This next one is also quite interesting

http://youtu.be/aa1fjo4eusc

It's about the religion itself.

Both of those, I thought were interesting.

There is quite a large Norse religious group in the UK - mostly identified as either Asatru or Heathen. Odinists are part of this grouping.

I haven't had a chance to watch the videos yet but will as soon as I get a few minutes.

Do they?

How do you know?

Any particular reason why their beliefs shouldn't be every bit as sincere as you claim yours are?

No one believes in the Norse gods just as no one believes in the Greek and Roman gods anymore, because everyone knows they're just stories about men playing silly buggers.

This is repetition, not explanation or clarification. It's also bald assertion. How do you know - on what basis do you claim to know - that nobody believes in the Norse gods any more than the Greek and Roman? I can't speak for the Roman deities but in modern-day Greece there's a small but very much alive pagan tradition worshipping the gods of ancient Greece (for example: http://goo.gl/fgtzrs and http://goo.gl/9vjCr2 ).

"Everyone knows" just won't cut it. Sorry, you're going to have to do better than that.

"Stories about men playing silly buggers" is precisely and exactly what a great many people say about your own religious tradition, of course.

Quite, time and education have taught us better. Christianity and every other such belief will eventually suffer the same fate.  :)

Meanwhile, enjoy yourself playing silly buggers!  ;)

Oh oh!

There are quite a few, even in this country, who do believe.

The thing that attracts some is the fact that the deities in which thge ancients belived were not omnipotent omniscient beings but people who were, at base, imbued with all the frailties of humans on top of the godly attributes.

They did not, ever, claim to be perfect. Not like some other God who's name I forget at the moment!

FFS don't tell Sassy and the Christ Almighty Gestapo that - you will have us both being tortured in the fires of Hell for blasphemy faster than I can type it (well, witgout typo's, anyway!)!

Not that I object to a little light torture in the right circumstances with the right partner, of course!

Oh such memories!

Good grief!  :o :o :o

I'm sorry about your gout, so you'd better forget about the vino. I'll have a little look round for some leather, masks and whips.

And a book of instructions too, since this particular 'diversion' is rather new to me.

You only introduce those you like into the scenario when you are face to face!  :P :P ??? ??? ??? :o :o :o :o
