Mostly feelings precede thoughts; typically a feeling is a recognition of some untoward state of affairs; the ensuing thought aims to rectify the problem.

Eg :
feeling : hunger, gives rise to thought "must go get a kebab"
feeling : hot and sweaty, gives rise to thought " a quick shower is in order I think"

Hi Torridon,

that was an interesting idea in one of the videos, that feelings are the drivers for thoughts. I'd never thought of it in that way before.

Yes, but just to complicate matters, it also works to some extent the other way round.  If you think of a plate of fish and chips, that might rekindle a feeling of hunger.  If you think of the sound of running water that might give rise to the feeling of wanting a wee.

They are well named as e-motions and as Torridon said thoughts can stimulate emotions which is the objective when employing propaganda to arouse religious or nationalistic fervour.

Hi Gonnagle.  You'll have to humour me a little as I have my own way of distinguishing the words in the article.  I use 'sensations' to represent what arises from that which stimulates the largely external senses like touch, taste, smell, vision, hearing, stomach pain etc.  'Emotions' I use to represent the motions within the psyche (soul) which seek expression (E-motions) like anger, fear, loss, excitement.  'Feeling' I tend to reserve for the more subtle which is felt when the psyche is still, like bliss, joy, love, beauty etc.

The interesting thing for me is that so far I have understood what Prof Solms is talking about, he hates psychometric tests :o
