Welcome to Bramble
« on: April 15, 2016, 10:22:20 AM »
I see we have a new member (which is sadly an all too rare occurrence round these here parts) - welcome Bramble - hope you dive into the fray and get stuck in with the posting  :)

Thank you all for your kind welcome. I've just been composing something for the introductions thread, which I'll now post.

I find it very surprising that so few people have joined us in the last year or two. I wonder what the problem is?

Lack of advertising, I fear :(

But nglreturns still attracts new members, even though it can go for a good while without any new posts.

Welcome Bramble, I love your name.
Floo, I think the reason there are few new members is that forums are less popular than they were because people communicate more by Facebook and Twitter.  This forum is extremely active compared to others and I like that because I prefer forums, I think it's easier to have discussions than by other types of social media but we are a dying breed I'm afraid.

It still doesn't answer the question as to why nglreturns is still getting new members when hardly anyone posts there now.

Shaker, I've been a lurker for a while and often thought I'd like to post something, then last week I finally decided to do so. Unfortunately, registering was not as straightforward as I thought it would be and it took four attempts and a week to accomplish. I have no idea how typical my experience was but I can imagine that some folk wouldn't have persisted and this might at least partly account for why there have been so few new members lately. There are typically more guests than members viewing. Perhaps some of these have tried unsuccessfully to join up.

Maybe Jakswan, the owner of this forum, might look into the possibility that difficulty in registering is resulting in lack of members.

As Gordon has posted before on this the problem is the number of spam joiners. Given the current set up it's difficult to avoid.

I have been on other SMF forums which have had problems.

Thanks for persevering, Bramble. As NS points out, it's the insane volume of spam that clogs up the system.

No, SMF doesn't seem a very good forum provider.

But why should SMF attract much more spam than other forum providers, if that is the case?

No idea floo.  You could start a thread asking people why they register and don't post though I doubt you'd get many answers.  From past experience on other forums, people do sometimes join because they find a particular topic interesting, or know someone else on the forum and are maybe invited, then other things intervene and they forget about it.

That has already been done.

Ah, I see, they don't. It's a combination of the numbers that forums attract of spam, and the kludge solution that SMF have for winnowing out the spam from proper joiners.

Dear Rhiannon,

Just a thought, off the top of my head, do the Mods need an extra pair of hands, a sort of secretary to deal with this kind of problem, and no, not to sit on Gordon's knee ::)
