No bongs ...
« on: April 26, 2016, 06:11:08 PM »

In these days of wide-spread ownership of watches and other time-keeping technology - are the chimes actually necessary?

Could £29 million over 3 years be better spent?
Are your, or your friends'/relatives', garages, lofts or sheds full of unused DIY gear, sewing/knitting machines or fabric and haberdashery stuff?

Lists of what is needed and a search engine to find your nearest collector (scroll to bottom for latter) are here:  http://www.twam.uk/donate-tools

Of course £29 million could be better spent - on the NHS for starters, though it wouldn't go very far. However, Big Ben is so ingrained in the national (and to some extent international) psyche as an instant symbol of/shorthand for London specifically and England generally that there's no chance of scrapping it. Won't happen.

Good idea, as long as you don't make a hash of it.

As long as you don't inhale, Jeremy.

A chap called 'Bill' once advised he took this approach (which kind of misses the point I'd have thought).

I had a feeling folk might, which is precisely why I used the 'b' word - it had been used in a radio news broadcast - as opposed to the 'p' word.  Why not have a bit of fun at other posters' expense?   ;)

It's a major tourist attraction and the clock itself is of some historical significance, so it's probably fair-enough.

I wouldn't like to see Big Ben go, it's a historical landmark, just like Nelson's Column and the lions in Trafalgar.

Yes - like you and LA I'm not really seeing a problem with this.

We all know a lot of money will be spent but the government wastes money all the time, and hides it, so why not?  How boring our landscape would be without these iconic buildings.

I wanted a whole range of clocks in our home that ranged from bongs to cookoos.

My husband the spoilsport won't hear of it, says it will drive him nuts specially as the cookoo clock I really wanted, went off every 15mins and seemed to lack an off switch for night time  :(

He threatened to shoot it if I got one  :-[

I like old noisy clocks.

Like grandfather clocks with a loud and serious sounding tick/tock that does the Westminster chimey thing every 15mins.

I call it, atmospheric the other half describes it as just a lot of racket.

 :(

Old noisey clocks are much better than the new fangled silent electric ones, IMO.

But in our household I'm outnumbered, so no bongs for me  :(  :-[ :'(

Are bongs priceless? What if it was 200 billion? I grow old and wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled, would it make that much difference if it was a recording?

Why? It's just a sound. Was talking to a friend last night about all the stuff you carry round and at base very little of it matters. For 3 years we will have little actual bongs.
