I went to see a radio program recorded at Broadcasting House in London when I was about twelve, we took a wrong turn somewhere on the stairs and my friend and I found that we had managed to walk on with the orchestra, still makes me feel embarrassed thinking about it, even now.

When anyone says I wish a hole had opened up in the ground, that's something I really do understand.

When I was twentyish I went to visit a friend who had moved in with her boyfriend.  I hadn't met the boyfriend before.  We had dinner and something got stuck as it went down, I drank some water and not only did I splutter but everything came out of my nose!  Never forgotten that and it remains as my most embarrassing moment.

I must have looked like a beetroot, although I'm sure everybody does something stupid at one time or another, at least that's what I like to think.

Interesting that the spokesperson said this is a frequent occurrence. If I were them, instead of setting up a response team, I  would try to find out why lorries keep hitting the bridge and do something about it. My first thought would be to check that the signage is correct. There was once a case where they resurfaced the road, raising it by a couple of inches but forgot to change the sign.

Back in my long hair days, gents hairsprays first came on the market.

Brands like Cossack and Falcon were regularly advertised.

"Ah", thought the teenage me, "I'll get some of this"

My hair was halfway down my back and I absolutely smothered it with hairspray.  It stank so much you couldn't smell the patchouli oil on my afghan coat.

Anyway, it was Friday night and after a skinful, I ended up at a Chinese restaurant with this girl I was trying to impress.

We sat down and as I tucked into my chicken and sweetcorn soup, my hair tumbled forward and got a bit too close to the candle flame at which point my whole head ignited.

I frantically beat the flames out but the stink was terrible and I needed to go to the gents to freshen up.

Like a lot of these places, the toilets were at the bottom of a steep flight of stairs.

"Are you sure you're alright?  said me bird, as I stood at the top of the stairs.

"Yes, I'm fine" I replied before the platform of my right heel got caught in the two inch turn-up of my oxford bags and I went arse-over-tit down the stairs.

I didn't see the girl again.

Not my embarrassing moment, but one of my Mother's, which still makes her four daughters giggle all these years later.

My late mother, who was quite a looker in her younger days,  seemed to be very attractive to male clergy. We would often come home from school to find her holding court, whilst the object of her attention was sitting there drooling, LOL!

One afternoon in winter, we arrived home to discover Mother standing with her back to the fire, talking to the pastor of our Pentecostal Church, who was sitting on the sofa in front of her. This was in the 60s in the days of the fashion for 'passion killers' (long coloured knickers down to the knees), Mother had a pair of blue ones. She had habit of pulling her skirt up a bit to warm her bottom by the fire. So engrossed in conversation with the pastor, she totally forgot herself, and had pulled up her skirt enough to reveal the legs of her knickers. The pastor must have thought all his Christmases had come at once, LOL. Us girls were wildly gesticulating to Mother from behind the sofa to adjust her skirt. When she realised what she was doing, she nearly died with embarrassment. Mother could have got degrees in prudery!

Reminds me a bit of a story I heard years ago about tennis player "Gorgeous" Gussie Moran, who in the immediate post war years was something of a pin up girl. In 1947 she played at Wimbledon in what was then considered a very daring skirt, which would blow up sometimes in the course of a match revealing her knickers (which were of a similar length to those of Floo's mum, only rather tighter with frills on the legs). Apparently the Dowager Queen Mary was so outraged that she ordered poor Gussie to apologise to her in person (which must have been mortifying) :o

Khatru's mention of Falcon hair spray for men takes me back to 1972 when 'feather' haircuts (a la Rod Stewart) were in fashion. A pal of mine bought a 'cut your own hair' comb: nothing electrical, but a white plastic comb thingy within which there were razor blades you could adjust outwards, and hey presto you can cut you own hair.

Several of us warned him and told him to get it feathered by a barber, but were we all single then so there was nobody to be unduly scared of if it went wrong - so, full of confidence, he had a go and ended up looking like he had contracted mange. He tried to laugh it off, but not as loudly as we laughed at him, and he ended up having to be scalped by the nearest barber the following day - which at that time looked very odd.

Happy days!

I was walking along the corridor of the top floor of an office.  At the end of the corridor was a typist's office.  The door was open and I saw the curtains at the window behind the typist suddenly burst into flames because they were dangling in an ashtray with an unextinguished cigarette.  I shouted 'Fire, fire' and picked up a fire bucket full of water and ran towards the flames.  I threw the water but missed the flames.  Unfortunately the top window was open and the water fell on a man waiting at the bus stop below.
It was at the same office that I ran upstairs quickly with my hands in my pockets.  Unfortunately I tripped over the top step and I launched like an arrow at the wall in front of me without managing to get my hands out of my pockets.  A massive egg like shape swelled up in the centre of my forehead.

That reminded me of the time when I was about 19 and decided a chap at college was starting to resemble Catweazel ( long hair and scruffy beard) so took it on myself to offer him a hair cut, just a trim :o tidy him up a bit  ::)

God knows why,  but he agreed, ( I suppose I was a fairly attractive young lass, poor misguided chap) and I thought how hard can it be?  :-[

Chop! Chop! Chop! Couldn't get rid of the steps I'd hacked into it. What was worse was although the hair on the outside was bleached by the sun underneath it was dark.

Made it worse than ever.

Fortunately I stopped and admitted it was a mess  :-[ and carted him off to the barbers to fix it.

Barber fell about laughing, the only way it could be rescued was a short back and sides........ ( very uncool)

His dad was an ex soldier who had nagged him to cut it, and I was known as that girl at college who brought about the magic transformation....... His dad was struck speechless, and even the dog didn't recognise him, and bit him  :-[

I wasn't very popular with him for a while, and I never tried cutting men's hair after that.

Dreadful it was, like big hacked steps  :-[

Some things are best left alone.  ::).
