Today I have had an eye check-up.

I am writing today to point out to all, whatever age you are that, if you have anything that appears to be wrong with your vision, GO STRAIGHT TO EYE CASUALTY. DO NOT WASTE TIME BY WAITING TO SEE YOUR GP  FIRST. They will not mind if they find nothing wrong because that is far better than delay. The Registrar chap who saw me today was telling me that if what happened to me over the years happened to someone today, the condition could be cured by modern treatment.

I consider myself very lucky to have the peripheral vision I have and, with lukck, it should remain the same until I die.

One of my sisters is having a terrible problem with one of her eyes. The vision is still blurry after an attack of shingles a year ago. The eye specialists at the specialist eye clinic don't seem to be able to get to grips with the situation!

Oh dear, I am very sorry to hear that, Floo. I do hope that when she has fully recovered, the eye will recover.

It has been a year now and the shingles cleared up ages ago. Sadly I suspect her eye isn't going to recover.

My father had glaucoma but left it too late before he sought help, if  high-pressure in the eyeballs is detected early it can be successfully treated without any loss of vision.

I make sure I get tested every year.

I was at the hairdresser's an hour or so ago and was saying how important it is to go straight to an eye Casualty Department. She said she hadn't known that; I hope she passes the message on to all her older customers.

My youngest sister is partially sighted without her specs/contact lenses. Although her sight problems were picked up at primary school my parents didn't like her wearing glasses, and this did her no favours at all!

Yesterday she had a fall, and banged her head. She has mild concussion, and her vision is rather worse. She has had her sight checked by an eye specialist, and it doesn't appear she has done them any damage, so hopefully when her headache recedes her eyes will be no worse than they were before.

Ah, yes, that was my situation too! When I was six, the teacher worked out that I was copying down numbers wrongly because of short sight. My mother was so upset that I'd have to wear glasses.  It didn't bother me - it was excellent to be able to see everything clearly, and, as a naturally confident child, it caused me no problems.
