School vandalism
« on: July 27, 2016, 01:59:13 PM »
This little rant was posted elsewhere caused by the news in the link, of vandalism to the school where my much loved friend is head teacher.

http://tinyurl.com/zvqsbwy

Grotesque violence has always been with us, and I suspect in some ways this low grade pointless scummery to have been as well but it is incidents like this that are far more likely to make me despair than terrorist atrocities. This has no point, abuses the people that are their brothers, sisters, kin. That it has happened to the school of my friend, John Daly, who is  outstandingly dedicated to the kids in his care, just underlines the utter disgust I feel for this.

I don't think there are easy answers but I know that the vast majority of people would want to find those answers. Stuff like this is currently much more important to me the Brexit\Scexit. I think the More United stuff a bit vacuous and at the same time weirdly questionable in our current electoral structure but I'd like to see more genuine co-operation in trying to get solutions to things we all agree are problems, rather than the idle oppositionalism and exaggerating of small differences.

All this cybernat\traitors\stupid\racists\elitist stuff that too many of us use to demonize those who we have disagreements with us won't work. It simply continues the problems! Some of the people you disagree with about how to achieve common goals may be some of those things but most are not. John and I voted the opposite way in the Scottish referendum but we have no difference in the belief that education is central to giving kids hope and opportunity. We all need to remember that the small day to day stuff is what makes the difference.

It looks as if someone has vandalised the website too, all I'm getting is a scrambled page of the Evening Times.

Very depressing, it's difficult to see a solution. The article says:

"We have the city's children during the day and we instil values and citizenship in them - but we can't do that alone.
"We need parents and community members to reinforce those values."

. . . but how many of those parents give a toss?

According to John, the vast majority. That's with 25 years teaching in some of Glasgow's more challenging areas.

The trouble is that the vast majority get on with their lives trying to be good people. The small minority that do things like vandalism and Twitter abuse etc have an impact out of proportion to their numbers. If only one school child in a hundred was a vandal, that would still be a lot of vandals in absolute terms.

Indeed yes, but there is an inclination, I think, to see it as a much bigger problem than it is, and to indulge in the 'underclass' idea which ignores that most people try to get by.

It feeds into the whole end of times rhetoric often used by the non religious. Bad, horrible, horrendous things happen but we have to see that it has always been so and is arguably better.

Looks grim to say the least!  If everything is put back as it was, there will have to be more security or it will happen again.

As a cranky apocalyptic swivel eyed fundy I object to you calling us
''Non Religious''. However I do feel you write with the optimism of a ''Viewer in Scotland''...... down here in England feelings for some mythical ''Noble yeomanry'' have been rattled somewhat by the Brexit vote and the level of disrespect in general.

Is the "non" a typo? If not, I would be interested to see some examples of what you are talking about.

Because I hadn't seen anything like this from John, and many friends have been offering help, I passed this onto him and he was unaware of it. That doesn't mean it's hooky but he is checking it out.

Dear Liz Cameron,

Quote
Councillor Liz Cameron, executive member for children, described those who had carried out the attack as "thugs".

Aye missus but they are our thugs, they weren't born thugs, stop calling them thugs and get aff yer fat arse and tackle the policies that made them thugs, yer Glasgow city council is a disgrace, lining yer pockets as kids go fuckin hungry, you are a civil servant, start serving the problems that made those kids what you describe as thugs.

Mmm I don't have a huge opinion of Glasgow City Council but what actual policies would you change to stop this behaviour, Gonzo? They are indeed our thugs, and if they are created, they are created by us, not just our elected representatives. Do you have any evidence that Liz Cameron is purely in it to line her pockets?

Dear Sane,

It was a rant at Cameron, Cameron is the one using the term "thug".

Quote

Absolutely no argument.

Quote
but what actual policies would you change to stop this behaviour,

I am no intellect but I can read, and my favourite newspaper is the Evening Times, it reports everyday on the infighting going on in the council, power struggles, hand outs, Labour councillor's  trying to hold on to their own little patch.

I have the paper open right now about the locals, the locals Sane!! starting a crowdfunding page

www.gofundme.com/2gmk6hw

But surprise surprise!! one of the locals who set up this crowdfunding page is quoted, "yet another break in at the school" what did the council do about the the other break ins.

There is also a nice quote from your pal Mr Daly, it starts "these vandals" it then goes on to list who these vandals have affected.

The article then goes on to tell us this is the fifth school to be targeted ( targeted, aye the thugs and vandals have targets ) and that Gowanbank has been subjected to previous attacks.

To end Sane, councillors are to busy hanging on to what the have, they are under threat from SNP, it is the common people who are affecting change in these communities, it is they that the council should be behind, the councillors are these people servants, they should be out and about in their communities making themselves more accessible.

Sorry old chum but when the cooncil is mentioned I go in to Mr Angry mode.

So which policies would you change? And what evidence do you have that Luz Cameron is only in it for the money? The questions aren't addressed in your rant, Gonzo.

And is there a real difference between thug/vandal as terms?
